Why? I didn't make it up. As stated above, Vodafone change the symbol on their branded phones. I haven't checked every network in the world but can only assume others do too.
I am surprised SE hasn't changed it, and the K800 still uses the triangle for GPRS/PS data instead of G or E etc as used on the W810, W550 and even more entry level models.

Yeah, that GPRS triangle looks ugly, and the white "wave" 3G symbol looks crap too...
Much prefer my "branded" Voda with the small G over the signal strength to indicate GPRS, and the nice square red 3G symbol for 3G...

Actually you are correct for branded phones, as was reported. The way it sounded was that the operator can change the symbol on an unbranded phone. We are straight now.

while we're kinda near the topic.. i was just looking to confirm the blue bar above the signal. I assumed it was the GPRS, as that's the only time it appeared on my w800i was when i went online or sent mms. But with the k800i it's always on (i've turned off the 3G).
Oh... and i can confirm.. the manual that came with my k800i was a pile of crap, about 15pages long i think.

My first posting here so be gentle.
I just wanted to point out that when i had my K800 on 3 (for a week, now on O2) i noticed a globe icon next to the UMTS icon. This appears in colour when in a 3G area and changes to black and white when its outside 3G coverage. the UMTS logo dissapears as well. so there seems to be at least two different icons telling you the same thing on a 3 braned K800.
I have just got the K800 on O2 and am much happier with it.

I'm also wondering about the GPRS blue triangle (above the signal strength icon). I have a K800i with Orange that I've just undranded using wotanserver. Before the unbrand it behaved in the same way as my unbranded K750 (also on Orange) in that the blue triangle only ever appeared when online or sending and mms. Since the unbrand, the GPRS symbol is on all the time.
I'm a bit concerned that something is going on in the background that requires a connection, hence it being on all the time, and am concerned that I may be racking up some data charges as I don't have any data allowance in my tariff.
I posted this in the thread about branded Orange K800s asking if anyone knew if this was ok but have not had a reply yet. Anyone in this thread have any ideas?

SCL411, cant answer you Q but two things to note
1. My unbranded K700i always has the GPRS triangle on so I wonder yours had been 'Oranged' to only show when you are doing something GPRS (Orange firmwre) but nowsimply indicates GPRS reception available in the generic unbranded firmware.
2. Does the data counter (settings/calls/time & cost) show anything going on. This logs last and total K used.
Quick Q's regarding debranding
1. Is it a simple process
2. Does the phone remain 'debranded' when you upgrade next time? Or do you use another credit.
3. If you find any problems with the generic firmware can you post back in the Orange thread.

batch_2001, thanks for your thoughts! I too have been thinking that it may just be showing me that it has GPRS reception (in amongst worrying about getting a huge bill from background data downloading!).
I really must be thick but I didn't think of looking at the data counter, D'oh! ---- I've just reset it as there was a couple of kb on there, presumably from my few trips onto the web. I'll keep an eye on it and post back when I have a better idea of what's going on - thanks for that one!!
Onto your questions:
1) The debranding via wotanserver was a dream. Paid for the credit via paypal, received an email within 30mins. Downloaded client and followed the instuctions on the website. Took about 10 mins to flash - just make sure you have a backup of your contacts as it wipes them!! Overall, simple, fast and inexpensive.
2) I'm not sure what happens when you upgrade the firmware after debranding as I've only just done it and it has the latest firmware on already. I'll post as soon as I know.
3) Of course, if I discover anything I'll report back. However, I'm not the most demanding of phone users so may not hit anything soon!

I feel a little more relaxed now! I just wish that the manual supplied by Orange was more detailed. As it stands, it's pretty poor and doesn't give a great deal of info about the more technical aspects of the phone.

Have you ever considered simply calling your GSM operator or even contacting the phone manufacture? Seems a lot faster than posting something then having to wait for an already easy to obtain answer.
