The whole thing sounds fishy to me. Just like the MacBookPro with the mag-safe power adapter that burned down - just doesn't make sense. I'm sort of curious thought - why would you charge the phone before putting the SIM card in it? First thing I do when I get a phone is to put my SIM card and make a few phone calls!

Possibly the heat difference between the battery (faulty and hot from charging - lithium batteries don't get hot while charging normally) and the cold metal sink may have caused a reaction that set of the discharge? Or just a plain old short circuit - perhaps some crap caught inside the battery cover caused a short when the phone was placed on the sink - couple of seconds later - pffft!

very interesting story, but I don't believe it! it really looks fishy to me! why the kitchen sink? why the sim card? I've hear of old conventional batteries blowing up, but I've never heard about lithium... all look very fishy to me.
