Hello SloopJohnB,
I was more concerned with his collective speech about Esato members and this forum. Many Esato members are quite smart and very knowledgeable about phones, SE, other venders and such. So to put them in a category of not knowing much about phones in general I think is very myopic and rather naive. Also he/she makes the statement that maybe the manufacturers are deliberately sabotaging their products so as to sell better one's later. More conjecture and I do not see the common sense in it. I do realize that venders are under tremendous pressure to get new and better devices to market and this can lead to less than perfect products, but to say that they do this on purpose is baseless and steeped in conspiracy theory. My final point is that I try not to speak in a "collective" as this can be thrown back in your face. How does he/she know the motives of companies, of Esato members, etc....? I think it is very presumptuous on his part to think so.

Hi guys i am back to SE after many years, first i bought a w800 a couple of days ago and i must say is a fantastic little mobile with a fantastic sound, as good as my iPod, then today i bought a K800i and i must say that the sound is really worst than my W800, lot of compresion on the sound,no dynamics, all the quality of my W is far away now with my K800, do you think that will or could be fixed in newer SW? I hope so.

I could be mistaken but I was under the impression that the media player in the k800i is the same as the one's in the w800i, and w810i just without the "Walkman" branding. If this is the case, then there is no difference between the players. It is a fact that the k800i is sans the "MegaBass" feature (thank goodness for a smart decision). With all things being equal, the media players are the same which would be hard to explain why yours sounds alot worse than your w800i.

Sure, this isn't a walkman phone, but that's no reason to take away all the dynamics when playing music. SE seem to have added a huge dynamic compression filter which turns up all quiet passages and turns down all loud passages, and also appears to limit the loud passages to some kind of "safe-for-ears" volume. The FM radio doesn't suffer from this problem, and has a clear and loud sound, so it's clearly firmware-imposed.
or by myself in other post, i have check side by side, K800 sounds bad if compared with W800;
I am a musician, i have check today side by side my new K800i with my W800i and this last one is far more better sound than my new K, this last one is very compresed sound i hate the way it sounds, i even put the same songs on both mobiles to hear the diference, W800 is much better, is nearly as good as my iPod 30gb, on the other hand my new K is dull sound and not crispy, by the way I also love the Super Bass is a good idea sometimes in some songs, I hope they fix this bad sound on our K800i

Well, if that is the case then it should be fixable with a FW update. Too bad Sony Ericsson doesn't have any hardcore fans that can write their own FW etc. =( if they did, then we all would be enjoying are high resolution video recording and our problem free OS's =(

Sorry but I would hardly trust the software from a "hardcore" on-sanctioned SE developer. If you screwed up your phone would you demand that SE repair it? The k800i is not an Walkman phone and should not be viewed as such. The comparison between the w800i and k800i are apples and oranges. They are targeted to different market segments. Is this too hard to understand? I have had a w800i, w810i, and now the k800i all in the space of 3 months and as far as my ears can hear, with either a pair of Etymotic headphones or Ultimate Ears headphones, the sound is quite comparable. Only with my iPod do I hear sound differences as I used a different codec and higher sampling rate to get the desired results that I want. The included headphones that come with the k800i are nothing less than crap. If you want good sound, you have to pay for it. Rather than disparage the k800 (which has the same hardware as the w800i and w810i, I think), spend about $150 and get a good set of headphones and see the difference.

well i have a shure e4c and the sound is soooooo much different with the k800i - lacks bass and very low volume compared to the w900i or even my friens z550i which incidentaly has the same media palyer as k800i. so its most probably firmware related .

I have a question for you. How does the sound compare to another device, say an iPod or another phone? Are you using the equalizer? If so, are you using the default settings, or are you using customized settings. I realize that the Stereo Wide setting in not very helpful.

But having said that I was impressed by the bass elements on the old k700i when it first come out and while I had one of those I compared both k700i and k800i handsets with full bass on the equaliser manual adjust on standard hands free kit earphones and the k800i seemed to have deeper bass elements. Its just going from the aggressive mega bass of the k750i/w800i which makes the k800i seem like it lacks the bass.
