Yes, I can understand the financial and increased public view on having Sony brand names plastered over SE phones, but this will only give SE a reason to segment the market.
eg. Because Cybershot phones have autofocus, it would take away from the fact that it is Cybershot, to have a with autofocus. Thus, having an excuse to do so.
That's why I don't want there to be a Handycam range. Imagine for music, Cybershot for camera and Handycam for good video, while the Cybershot sits on QCIF? I don't think so.
And it would make SE a manufacturer based on Sony branding.

I agree. I don't think it will be useful for SE to use the handycam branding - ultimately an imaging phone should include good video as well as photos. When I say good video I mean atleast qvga (good for a phone).

Cybershot branding should be enough to cover imaging phones, walkman enough to cover multimedia phones (why shouldn't walkman be associated with video as well as music -aka video ipod?).

They should make new SE branding for the smartphones that is not a rehash of an old sony brand. Clie was never a global phenomonen (few people in Australia know what a "clie" is), Viao is just too high end and many pepople are sceptical about the pricing of Viao laptops (don't blame them - they are nice but over-priced) and I don't think it's a brand "for the people". If SE use it it won't help the average joe get excited about SE smartphones. Most will look at it and go "Viao - It's gonna be overpriced - forget it".

You appear to be missing the point, is ONE company, not two.

the name clie would be good for the asian markt.
if SE uses it worldwide i gues we will adapt, but the commonman won't be as intrested because most people don't know it.

SE looks alot more like sony these days. but some brand names isn't everything. if SE should decide to stop using UIQ (other thread here on easto), then sony would really be in charge. and that will lead to alot of angry users/fans

I personally do not see why people are making a mountain issue of such a small matter. I personally dont think that many of you own your own businesses. A profit based business is soley to make profit. SE dont care about customers integrity, they just care about pushing out products which will sell and make money. In business its a dog eat dog world so no need to make such an issue.

Actually, it's three companies, Sony, Ericsson, and . should put their own branding on the new multimedia smartphones, and not use either SONY or ERICSSON branding, IMHO.

I think it's you who are missing the point - you seem to think is both Sony and Ericsson together. It isn't an amalgam of it's parents; is an entity in it's own right, that is owned by both parent companies but has it's own identity (and branding).

Sony Ericsson are the ones producing the phones. Sony Ericsson is a company in it's own right. It may be owned by the two parent companies, but Sony Ericsson has it's own staff, own board etc., therefore decisions are made by Sony Ericsson, not Sony or Ericsson.

Well, instead of SE forging ahead with Sony brand names, wouldn't it be much better if they could create their own?
I mean the Clie. Who does know what the Clie is anyway? I only know because I faintly remember it floating around a few years back, and that I just stumbled over it in wikipedia. It's not a very strong brand name like or Cybershot (and even Cybershot's not that strong compared to ), and it would be far more logical to create a new brand name that would promote SE's various products. Like RAZR for Motorola is instantly associated with 'fashion'. So SE should have xxxxxx to represent handheld smartphones from them.
Much fairer to both companies.

mate you haven't read a freakin' word I wrote. I have no idea how you think I said that Sony or Ericsson are responsible for SE decision making.

Infact I am saying exactly the opposite. I am saying that because SE is it's own entity it should have it's own branding for the multimedia smartphones and NOT use the SONY Clie brand.

Is that not clear from what I wrote?????

guys,

let us leave things and the present set up as they are. bottom line SE as a business entity is gaining ground in terms of market share and profits.
with regards to the use of the walkman and cybershot on mobile phones, SE is just capitalizing on these 2 Sony brands which are already icons on their own rights. walkman for the music and cybershot for photo images.

*we would not be surprised if in the near future, SE would also capitalize on their other icon brands like Trinitron (for color/mobile tv) and Betamax (for video) or just the recent Bravia and Qualia (SE own version against the Vertu brand). LOL

on a positive note, let us just be glad that the merger of the 2 giants has been positive these past few years and already bearing fruit not just for the Merged company but for all of us.

on a negative note (especially for the Ericsson users), sooner or later all of our collectibles (Ericssons) would be just for display and not working anymore, but the SE brand would still live on and on.

if the other guys here feel that Ericsson is being left out, well (correct me if i am wrong) why is Ericsson not complaining with all the profits of SE. we have to take note that Ericsson is a pioneer and a leader in terms of telecommunication equipment and infrastructure as well as of all those servers and whatever disks on a typical cell site. Ericsson is in its own right is still a behemoth when it comes to telecommunication equipments together with another struggling brand before : Alcatel and now Alcatel-TCL (merger between Alcatel and a chinese manufacturer).
