"Take two bottles into the shower??"

The age old argument: one box for each vs. one box for all.....

....not that "it's the best way", but I prefer a convergence device....

....BTW, .mp3 was supposed to be afree digital quality music format at it's inception, without copyright restrictions(like a tape recorder, remember those?)......yet, as we all know now, everything seems to be chargable, and severely restricted.....

"....ooo, send us that .m4a, will ya dude? What do you mean you can't??"

I agree with what you are saying, but m4a's can be copied. It's m4p's that are protected

I seriously think the dedicated music player will take a big hit next year.

I wouldn't say mobile companies are out to get the ipod but the competition between manufacturers alone - to produce the best one - will push the technology along.

And if Apple doesn't know this then why do the rumours of an Ipod phone keep surfacing?

For that average person the commute to and from work is the time they listen to their music which at max is a couple of hours a day.

@max

You hit the nail on the head.

Mobile download music is effectively 'trapped' on the phone and that renders music phones simply toys for teenagers.

If Mobile downloads are really gonna take off, phone manufacturers need to get serious with more memory and A2DP Blutooth Stereo. Car Audio/Home Hifi manufacturers also need to get with the program so that consumers can access their stored music without fiddly cables and FM modulators.

Honestly, I'm convinced A2DP is the key which will unlock the future of music. The Sony MEX-BT5000 A2DP/AVRCP headunit is just the device that's needed.

Exactly so, which is why 1-2GB is more than enough for that purpose. It get's you through the week and when you are relaxing on the weekend downloading new music, you can create new playlists on the phone. No big deal.

Myself I just add songs as I find new ones I like and delete ones I don't listen to anymore. I never seem to have any times where I need to delete songs I'm still listening to, and I only occasionaly wish for a song that I don't have on me. 99% of my music pleasure is listening to my current favourites.

The iPod will have to evolve.
You used to download your digital camera shots to a PC and then print them. Now PictBridge allows camera to connect direct to the printer. NO PC involved.

The same must happen with the iPod. iStore straight to iPod without the need for computer and iTunes either by UMTS/EDGE/CDMA/WCDMA or by Wifi/Wi-MAX. If not the iPod will become as obselete as a Sega Mega-Drive

@Carkitter

I agree, the iPod will have to change. is already redeveloping its Playnow service to include full track downloads so it seems to be going down that road itself.

I don't think the mobile OEMs are really attempting to take on the dedicated music player head on - not yet anyway.

However, I also don't believe for one second the mobile OEMs aren't capable of filling mobile devices with more than the maximum current 4GB - 8GB flash memory we see now and because of this they are quite happy to play catch-up.

The popularity of the iPod has only opened people's eyes to the fact that you can have a workable MP3 player on your mobile phone which enables you to carry around one device - not two - so in a way the OEMs have benefited from the iPods success.

Exactly! - and I think this is what the majority for people's listening habits are. Dare I say it but soon MP3 players on mobiles will become as common as cameras are now.

My only portable MP3 player is my PSP or K750I, this will change when I finally upgrade but I would be more then happy using a P990I or any other SE phone with bluetooth headphones over an Ipod anyday, because I don't have an Ipod.
If I did have one then maybe it would be different as it would of been a present or I would of spent £300 on it.
But lot's of people are happy to just use there phone as it's the one gadget you always have with you.

Now that I use my phone, I no longer own an mp3 player! If I need serious portable music storage I can use my laptop.
