I think it is a good marketing strategy segmenting products to target different groups. However, developing an all-round phone would be targeted also for another different group. This could be in SE's smartphone range. The concern of people is that they don't see a very high end phone from SE that has all the latest tech in it. Don't miss the fact that other series will still sell. You won't find everybody liking smartphones because of their size, complexity, cost or any other reason. The downside in not keeping at par with competitors on highend phones is losing market share on that segment and off course losing confidence on customers that see their manufacturer as not keeping abreast to current technology trend. If SE releases a smartphone say with: 5mp, wifi, great storage, good music player and recording technology plus all the other stuffs, i don't think such moves would dampened sales of other units but rather keeps in competition with rival units say N95. I really don't see much harm in that

And I still believe that the N95 is just a show pony for everyone to talk about and generate interest in Nokia. I have got just about every feature under the sun, but it really isn't meant for mass market.
It is there to give Nokia an image.

@kulorex
That may be true but only in assuming that market share in the high-end sector is what they're after.
Top-end devices won't go much to increasing market share overall as they are a niche product. Profitability would be more important in that sector I think because the devices will cost more to develop, so you would be more concerned about it being profitable while selling in relatively low numbers.
A high-end imaging device I think is what a lot of people are after.

I disagree,

started with the fully speced high end phones like the P800 to the P910, when they were launched they were far ahead of their rivals!
I think they should keep that tradition, not following Nokia but bettering them!
They learned from their P990 stuff up, so I expect the P990 successor to be fully speced and more! With a better release date!
Also in terms of pricing the P990 is cheaper than most of the N-series phones they can and should push for a little more on the base pricing in order to create the ultimate phone!

That is true, but the reason why they started early on with high-end phones was to get itself a reputation as a niche high-end manufacturer - which was part of its strategy - and which it successfully did.
It did this by churning out handsets such as the T610, which were able to compete across the board by being competitively priced - so competing in the mid-sector - but also loaded with features so it was able to compete in the high-end too.
The consequences of this were you had a company that has garnered a good reputation in the high-end but at the same time was able to compete with the relatively few handsets it had in its line up.
Phones like the W810i and the K800i are the money makers for

The T610 was handset of the year. And add to the money makers the soever popular K750i.

@786KBR
The P990 may well be lower priced now but at launch was more expensive than my N93.
Hope fully this tech war between UIQ3 and S60 3rd Edition will bring us all better devices well for those of us that want them anyway. But i really don't think you can write of S60 3rd Edition because it doesn't have a touchscreen. The current spec on my N93 is sufficient for me and i want off board Sat Nav and prefer the N93 from factor to N95. Although i prefer the form factor of my M600 to anything else just hoping the next couple of firmware upgrades can do some magic.

@786KBR- i hope SE has learnt from the p990i fiasco. Actually, it's good that this happened so they learn a lesson.

Do smartphones make any money for the company? Possibly not, They act as halo products, filtering down through the range, being no more than a technical showcase. I can guarantee that every major phone maker will have a smartphone out if not already. Imo, Sony Ericsson are really clever in making you choose between music or camera, because if they give you a phone that is equally good on both aspects then that immediately cancels out the need for cybershot only phones and walkman branded phones.
