@ads
hi mate, not me personally, SE center here felt somehow responsible for seling the first batch of p990i which comes with singapore version of firmware. proved to be very problematic and for a short period of time they offered a first class service, delivered to your door for reflashing its firmware.

"Well, there's nothing horribly wrong with China. Nowadays China has caught up in terms of quality, but obviously"
You know that huge container ship that went to the UK with all the Xmas goodies on, when it goes back to China its picking up all the plastic to recycle it, that’s what everything in China is made of RECYCLED CRAP. My forever going wrong, wish I had never bought it M600i was made in China

@ nokevin - I think we've firmly established that your phone is
not the norm for an M600i wherever it's made. My M600i is made in China and as far as the hardware goes it's absolutely perfect - the few problems I have are just the remaining software issues which would be the same whether the phone was made in a factory in China, or handcrafted by elves just down the road.
I know there have been issues with screens in the distant past, but I can't believe the screen component in my Chinese M600i isn't the exact same component used everywhere else - modern screens are so good that even the slightest difference or drop in quality would be blindingly obvious.

* Maybe some left-over production capacity in France from Sagem or so?
* Maybe the cost structure of the m600 (or p990) is such that it does not pay off to make it in remote low-wage country because wages do not account for sufficiënt part of the price
* maybe w950 and m600 are made on the same line which is too complex to relocate to asia already
* maybe some new parts that require skilled personnel to apply, or required some kind of quality control that is not easy to maintain very remotely. Possibly once the production line is at cruise speed it might be relocated...
Could be a hundred of reasons. Now I'm getting curious.
My w810 is made in Malaysia btw.

imo there is a pretty simple answer and it has to do with the costs. is it possible, if those models were made in asia, would they be cheaper?

@ Dela - my (few weeks old) M600i is made in China, and so are some (all?) W950's, so it may well be that although production started in France first, it's since moved to China. Certainly if the line in China can make M600's it can make W950's, they're virtually identical after all.
