350KB is phone memory, not memory card. I also am unable to backup on PC as the phone hangs up and connection gets lost.

o.k., so 350kb phone memory free... how do you connect to pc? Usb-cable I hope!? If "the phone hangs up", is the cable properly connected?
Is your phone's infrared or bluetooth switched on? You cannot connct via usb when IR or bt are "on"! When you connect to pc via cable, the phone should ask you wether you want to connect via a) pc suite b) data transfer c) modem...
For connection to pc suite/for back-up/appl.install etc. choose "a)"... Did you drop your phone? Take out memory card and restart phone without memory card. Tghen insert memory card while phone is on... Does phone "recognise" the card (it's what I had to do after my e61 flew a good 20metres of my car roof! Thanks to luck and a good krusell case it's immaculate, but at first it wouldn't "see" the memory card... For now that's all I can think of...

right...??? if you can't copy sms's to memory card (which you would remove for flashing anyway)... can't you sent them to another phone (via bluetooth, e.g.), and then, when your phones been flashed, washed and scrubbed clean, you send them back???
