Yes we have dead spots, yes we have areas that we have NO coverage, yes there are spots that we will NEVER offer coverage. The same hold true for other cellular carriers... Vzw, Cingular, TMobile, Cricket, Alltell, Cellular One all have dead spots, and areas that they will never offer coverage. You want someone to blame? Blame the FCC. Its not our fault that we have to go thru zoning committees, planning, voting, R&D, and everything else just to get a tower put up so that everyone can have crystal clear coverage in the middle of nowhere. Need someone else to blame? Blame yourself and others like you that don't call in with cross streets where we have dead spots. We can't build (or make an attempt to) if others dont call in to let us know where coverage is weak. We do hear your cries, and we try to match your needs with good business decisions. We may not have the best coverage in Chicago, but our coverage may be better in another large city. CALL US, LET US KNOW WHERE THESE SPOTS ARE (and don't expect us to fix it overnight)!!! We can sumbit feedback and your voices as a whole will be heard but 1 person alone cannot change the face of wireless service, we all have to chip in. Dont think that just because I work here that I get stellar service wherever I go, I have to call in to report dead spots just like the next person. After enough people have reported the same spot, it's determined (by the powers that be) as to whether or not a cell site needs to be built. Then after zoning committees, the tree huggers that dont want forests cust down, and the mayor who wants to be reelected and his platform is no new cell towers (remember Flagstaff), if we manage to complete all that THEN we can build a tower and offer service in that area. I agree that ATTWS's GSM service isnt that great right now, but for a system that is only 11 months old, its not that bad.

i had att gsm for three weeks...worked great first 2, then: no one could hear me 85% of the time.
construction? there IS a big building going up near me.

the problem was at home (lower manhattan).

after trying another phone, i had to switch back to tdma.
att tech says the system should be fully up by march (or so).

oh well, goodbye unlimited minutes!

@fisherking:

i work right in downtown manhattan and i have to say that the AT&T GSM signal is stronger than the TDMA signal.

w\ TDMA, i could only use my phone in the parts of the office near a window. w\ GSM, i can use my phone in the inner parts as well. the same is true of my home.

what i miss under the new GSM plan is the coverage that TDMA had on long island. i was out there 2 weeks ago and there was like zero coverage evereywhere -- no verizon, no sprint, no T mobile, and no AT&T GSM -- and then my boss and his super old AT&T TDMA phone was using his constantly.

i was like.. i knew i shoulda gotten that simens.

cmm3...
funny, i'm just below houston, facing south.
i think the new "w hotel" is killing my signal.

meanwhile, my girlfriend lives on long island.
my gsm was better there than the tdma signal.

opposite experiences...

I was a loyal ATT wireless customer from 1996-2000. I bailed because of the crappy PCS service in the US Northeast and the double billing that was happening. ATT double billed me for two months and never credited my account. I tried to resolve for over a year. I faxed them proof of payment. They never got back to me. The last conversation the braindead chick told me that "the fax was blurry" so they could not credit my account. I asked if I could fedex the check. They said no - only fax. F them. I left ATT and switched to TMobile GSM. I love it and there is no comparison in my opinion. ATT can lick my ringpiece...all they do is promise and rarely deliver. Stick to a european based carrier like T Mobile. They know GSM. ATT knows how to double bill and give zero customer service. Also, I can now use the same phone in Europe, Asia and the states. T Mobile did not even charge me when I was in Germany. Very cool.
