vista business has done me ok so far but there is a built in option to upgrade to ultimate at any time for a small fee.
that 40" seems to be around £1000 from a quick google I did so yeah, not a bad price
Yeah it is, I notice going by the Sony Centers price for the 40" glass framed Bravia in a package including a Sony DVD player, stand etc etc it's around £3500 which is a lot. I think there is some inclusive thing with Sky in there though what with Sky HD.
I notice Sony Vaio's come with a pre-installed OS. I'm not really keen on that as really PC or laptops should be coming with the original OEM DVD of Vista.
I know Dell will ship the XPS M1210 and M2010 with it though including utilities etc.
I had a bad experience with pre-installed XP you see which puts me off it as I found the restore feature did'nt work. Luckily Dell shipped out a proper disc to me including utilities at that time so everything was fine in the end. Apparently Dell had loads of complaints that this "restore from a partition" did'nt work so these days they include the OS disc.
Whats Sonys warranty like? I'm not one for aftercare but Dells "Complete Care" is very good. They aim to fix you're machine within two business days on site in you're home if anything goes wrong, say a hard drive or motherboard. I have had a motherboard go wrong and the service I received was first class!
Is Sony's a "return back to base" type warranty/aftercare?

WIth Vaio's, you used to get recover disks to restore the PC back to original state when you bought it. Now they store the data for the disks in a special partitiion and provide a utility to make your own disks from that. Obviously its best to do it when you first get the PC otherwise it might be a bit late when you actually get a problem
I use recovery all the time and it has never failed me. Already done it once on this new vaio.
my kids also have had a few vaios and I'm forever restoring their PC from the original discs a sthey go to all sorts of sites and get all sorts of infections and install all sorts of rubbish software
Sony give 1 year RTB, base being in France. The couple of times I have had to use it the pc got collected one day (and they provide a special protective box for it), shipped to Framce same day, fixed next day and I got it back on the 3rd day.
Anytime in that first year you can buy an extended warranty so its worth looking out for deals

I see, it would be good if you did'nt have to send it away though. It was'nt really that much for extended and complete aftercare with DELL on my desktop, only about £150 for 3 years which is peace of mind unlike these other so called peace of mind after cares such as the dreaded PC World.
I'll look into the Sony one a bit more.

@masseur, I was about to recommend the Bravia X-series too. I've seen the picture quality on it compared to the Bravia S and V-series side-by-side in the shop I used to work in and the difference is noticeable, without even looking too hard. I've got some queries regarding the Vaios, seeing that you've been through so many of them. What is the reason you've been through so many of them? Upgrade or due to them becoming unserviceable? How is the reliability of both the software and hardware? Thanks.
Back to the topic, I've got a few Sony earphones, mainly those with the Bass-excite tip. A Sony Network Walkman, NW-E002 black (the sound quality's great, but the bundled software sucks). A Sony Discman, bought it more than 5 years back and it still works. Produces great sound though I hardly use it these days.

I have a group of friends who I circle through selling my old vaios and they are always happy to get my hand-me-downs. I only upgrade every 18-24 months simply to keep up to date, not because of problems. I have always been very happy with Vaios and while I know I can buy cheaper, travelling alot I need that reliability. Even the low end ones I get for my kids have been excellent

The TX is good if you're looking for something small and light, but if you want something with a bit more horsepower, maybe the SZ-series would be better? The prices of both are about the same over here in Singapore.
