That wasn't the gps that was the (beta) map software. I have compared the built in gps to my Holux GPSlim 236 (which is a good bluetooth unit sporting the sirfIII chip) tracking round the same route using Nokia Sporttracker software. Although the start up time is almost twice as long as the Holux when it starts going it produces just as accurate measurements. Even with the keypad closed and placed in a padded camera bag on my hip and under a jacket it had no problems relaying my true position. If Nokia could just build in better satellite prediction memory and cut down the start time- and if TomTom could hurry up a bit- then it's bye-bye Holux.

Hopefully, fingers crossed everyone, there is a new upgrade coming that hopes to try and optimize the GPS software as much as possible. My friends at Nokia tell me that help is on the way, for the battery and the GPS.
Did everyone cross your fingers?

yes I know it's most probably the software, although Sapporro kindly recommende that SIRF III would have been better. I also mentioned that I wished the program had more options.

Hold the phone in a clear area and a bit high at an angle towards the sky and go to view satellite info...i found this to increase pick up time and sometimes my phone even picks up in under twenty seconds!!yes you cant expect total accuracy especially where parallel roads are close as only the military gps systems can currently pin point you to the nearest meter.i find the n95 gps is ok as a bye the way device to show you where you are but obviously at the end of the day no tech is fool proof and you gotta use your common sense to know where exactly you are headed...stop simply relying on voice commands as i've even seen the nav system on my merc tell me to take the wrong turn once or twice!

Sadly I'm not able to hold it up and to the sky when i'm driving
However the issue I'm pointing out is not that the voice was wrong on an occassion, rather that it completely maps an inconveniant and long route.
As mentioned the purpose of the blog post is to show people not to rely too much on it even though Nokia advertise it as a full fledged GPS device.

Hey Amnesia,
try this to help with the navigation. Delete your current maps on the mem card and download them again. People have reported that this seems to work rather well in fixing their problems. Also there is a great forum over on Nokia that talks about the N95.
Cheers and salaams.

One key component that no one has mentioned here is that the N95 uses A-GPS. So as long as this is not implemented the cold start times will be slower.
By the way, the N95 is not capable of getting a cold start lock in less than 45 seconds. Nokia verified this fact.

I'll try putting on the maps again to see if it'll help routing.

Well then maybe i got a bug

but i can assure you it's a positive bug as once or twice my phone definitely got a lock in much less than 45 seconds and i dont need nokia to time it for me lol.but amnesia you are right ppl shouldn't over estimate the gps system on this phone as usually lock on takes average two min up to six min.oh and you can always hold it out the car window to face the sky(dont blame me for any accidents or tickets using this method

) use your logic man...and obviously that's just for lock on and after that it picks up easily.
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT
..........
il empires N95!
