Hmmmm ok.
Well another car which you either love or hate is the megane "one with big bum"
Just looked on autotrader site and you can get a 1.4 for around 4k
Decent spec to with ABS, CD Player, Electric Windows, Air Con
Only thing i would be wary about the Megane is its french and build quality wise they aint the best

The Old model corsa had the lowest insurance quote for 17 year olds in Auto Express a few months ago, there not too bad inside either. Big enough for me (5ft 7) with a lot of legroom when my sister got one.
She got the 1.2 Life model and it was very, very low spec and everything felt cheap. The design models are aparantly very good though

How about something
brand new for under 5k.
It's the Perodua Kelisa and comes in at £4, 795.
Quite ugly looking if you ask me and comes in a 1l 3-cylinder only.
55.4mpg, ins. group 3, 55bhp, top speed: 88mph. Cheap, but the spec's awful!
Alternatively:
Used Fiat Panda's aren't bad, 2006 models are about £6k for a 1.2l model.

and basically thats ready to go now.... insurance cost me about £240 for a year on that car.... it comes with MOT (12 months) and tax (5 months i thnk).... oh, and I'll put a CD player in there for you bud....
all round cheap car mate, and little over 70k miles on the clock

(which i personally think its good....) bare in mind its a P reg tho.....
clearly with 5k you can get the gti verson tho, (which it just so happens a mate of mine is selling - and that is nice and fast(),....

You can also consider a Renault Twingo, it was face-lifted on 1999 or so, and has some good equipments like A/C, ABS etc. Some versions also have a 1.2 16v engine with +70bhp, which is probably very agile.

You can get decent 3 1/2 year old corsa for less than £5000:
http://www.networkq.co.uk
From a main dealer with a years warrenty, aircon cd player remote central locking, electric windows, electric wing mirrors. I ave a 1.4 and get over 40mpg (about 370 miles to a tank average) but a 1.2 is even more economical.
