i may have explained the second point better if i had the time.
what i meant is that a mobile phone like nokia 1100 didn't present any inconvenience while using it. BUT, this is a handset which lasts in the hand of its holder for some long time. the latter one, may feel annoyed by the low quality materials and overall build of this handset and when willing to upgrade, he /she might think of jumping into another manufacturer's boat.

it can leave a negative affections related to material and build quality, at the consumers perception.
my dad (who don't like techy stuff), used a motorola C100 for 6 month. after that, and because the materials/build quality/cheap screen, he swore he will never touch a motophone at all..

i hope you're getting what i mean

After owning a cheap Nokia for a while he might want to splash out a bit more on his next handset and because new SE phones are more expensive he would, more than likely, want to sample something from that range.

This is an SE strategy.

It is true though, that if you own a cheap phone as your first phone, and it suffers from cheap materials, this can affect your perception of the whole range.

One of my first phones was a bargain basement phone made by NEC, it squeaked and rattled like no ones business and my next phone definitely wasn't an NEC, even though NEC make great phones for the Japanese market.
