O2 does not have free GPRS in the UK, they used to, but not anymore.

When and why did they stop? Also does any one think O2 may start better data plans sometime soon?

Free GPRS, hoho that would be piquant.
What about the UK?

I have a 5MB data bundle with Orange which cost me £4 a month.
I've just tried out the Blitzplanet service to send MMS via GPRS.
It only costs 10p to send a message.

This is how Blitzplanet works:

I am sending the MMS over the Internet or GPRS and then get the option to alert
the recipient of the MMS by sending them an SMS.
10p is being paid at this point for sending out this SMS alert.
Both parties need to have the programme installed like with Skype or any messenger.

I have only tested the programme by sending the image to myself so far.
The installation doesn't cost anything, but I am not sure if you can use
the programme without paying something. I think you can as you get free
credits. To test that I have to wait until my girlfriend comes back so
that I can send it to her phone.

The website says that it only works with Sony Ericsson phones and some Nokias.

They stopped it over a year and a half ago, it was never meant to be free in the 1st place with O2, its because of an error in the network lots of people were getting it free without paying, O2 was aware of this, and decided to change the error status into a free promotion service for customers, then later on, O2 decided to have it brought to an end. O2 was the 1st ever network though to offer it free of charge, and on certain priceplans with O2 you still have free internet, but that is free wap mins, they are priceplans known as genie plans, in the UK. Some custmers are still on them plans, but the draw back is, that you cannot send mms or recieve mms with those plans.

The issue of weather O2 are going to bring out a data plan, is one that has been discussed many times in this forum, all we can do is wait and see.

my operator also provides free gprs as a promotion sort of thing, otherwise it's call and text rates are high as compared to others...
Scores of people go for it, just coz of free gprs...
