I think you should open an opinion poll to decide whether or not to open a poll on this issue

It's be pretty ironic if this thread kept going for about 300 pages...

Its funny if to ask which for specifics coz we can all see that. 1000 or 1500 post is enough.

I don't see any problem with a thread of thousands of posts. I've read some of the biggest, including the camera driver threads (all of them).

That's called research. In the old days that's what you did, you pulled out a book and read. Funnily enough reading is still the most useful technology for learning stuff!

I don't think there is any feasible solution - 1. you can't kill a thread just because it's large, that would be unnatural and unfair to the people who are still using the thread. 2. You can't break it up since that doesn't achieve anything unless someone is prepared to go through the existing thread and summerise it. Whose gonna do that? The thread starter may not be involved anymore. It's certainly unfair to expect mods to do that work. So realistically it's simpler to leave the thread as it is.

Just my view. I certainly hope no one closes the camera driver thread, it's one of the most productive threads at esato. A lot of good camera drivers are still coming out of that thread.

Not asking for the thread to be closed, it could be tailored. Posts like 'ok, I'll try it when i get home' (no disrespect to whoever posts it) offer no information to the new reader and are imho expendable.

Well to be honest, speaking with Esato in perspective, we simply dont have the manpower to edit, clip posts which may seem unnecessary.

As masseur mentined, mods are not gods ( ) there are many areas where the mods have limited knowledge on what is being discussed. Also, deleting posts which may seem unnecessary for one may not go down well with the person who posted it because it may feel too rude. Not even with that person, there is a very thin line between "whats necessary and whats not".

From what I infer, long threads are things you have to live with. Inherent parts of the "forum" system. Although things can be made better by the thread starter or a mod who has the time to provide links (on the first page) to those parts of the thread which may be important, this may not be the case in all long threads. Also, clipping post in between the discussion will also remove some of the fun element. After all it is a conversation that we are having.

Frankly speaking, I have not had the need to search a lot to find what I wanted in a very big thread. Of course this does not mean its that easy finding stuff in a long thread. I still believe we can live with long threads. Long threads mean lots of interest, lots of interest means lots of people, lots of people mean different point of views. Why fix it if not broken?

Well if these threads are as productive as you say, keep them going.
