AFAIK the CMOS type sensor that can beat a regular CCD sensor was the APS type CMOS which is incorporated in DSLR cameras likes Canon, nikon olmpus and sony specifically the popular APS-C. a typical CCD seeks more light than a regular CMOS sensor. even if it's smaller than CMOS when compared size to size in a mobile phone camera. like for example S700 by it has a focal length of F=1:4.0 f=4.35mm while it can capture amazing shots from within better than any 1.3 CMOS phone cameras around with a focal length of f=4.8mm and aperture rating @ F=1:28. though APS-C sensor has a very large size and is able to capture more light due to some specialized technological expertise from the manufacturer.

if we talk about phone sensor nowadays CMOS is generally not always smaller than CCD. but it's more power saver than CCD that's why we could barely see CCD sensors incorporated in a phone but technology develops and improves very fast that why even in a 5.9mm slim samsung we have a 3mp camera. so far sharp has the widest range of camera phones that has CCD. correct me if i'm wrong:) if we compare head to head a CCD and CMOS of the same size CCD clearly wins from the light sensitivity it provides.
