Hi all,

I really think many of you are missing the point not everyone wants or needs their device to do the same things it really is that simple.

If all some one wants is a good Music and Video playback and to view their photos on a a great screen with unique viewing and zooming options. The iPhone will do all of these better than most if not all devices.

If they also only need there Calendar and to be able to send and receive E-Mail it also does this well including the ability to have push E-Mail without the need for any additional software or complicated set up and includes both Yahoo and Hotmail out of the box. It does all this again as good if not better than any other device.

Again if they only need to do a small amount of Web browsing and are able to use a WiFi connection the in built Safari browser will again do this better than most devices.

Yes the iPhone has weaknesses but if they are not important for the user then that really doesn't matter, and that is the point what may be important to you is very unlikely to be to everyone else.

IMO the iPhone is a very strong Multimedia device with limited PDA functionality and for some people that is all they want or need. All this device is rubbish is just peoples personal bias as to what they feel they need it very obviously doesn't apply to all. As otherwise it just wouldn't sell, you can bet the sort of people that will buy an iPhone would absolutely hate and see no point in a P1 or E90 or even a TYTN as all the added functionality would be of no use or interest to them.

This is the same argument that appears constantly on this Forum about why one device is rubbish or great without taking into account at exactly which market segment it is aimed at.

Their really is no perfect device that fits all their is only what is best for each users needs and it really is time that some grasped this very simple concept. Just because you don't like it or want it doesn't mean it is rubbish it just means it's not the device for you.

Marc

@Dogmann

You're also missing one rather enourmously big point.

Cost

The price of the iphone is extortionatly high and for that price, I expect if you asked most people they'd want to get as much as they can for that high price.

Yes average joe will buy it in being dumb along, but the rest of us with half a brain cell wouldn't pay any more than £30 for a phone without MMS for example.

It's illogical why they've missed the little things in a phone that costs this much.

If it were FREE on some of those tariffs, I'd understand more, but given it's cost it's just not acceptable.

The main point is, given what it costs, regardless of wether average joe wants it, it SHOULD have these things. When I tell people you can't do MMS I suspect most will look at it in disgust, but it's these little things that Apple don't tell you in their flashy ad campaigns that win the public over.

If it cost less, there wouldn't be an issue, but value for money, it isn't.

Besides, if someone wants a large screen with great video and audio playback there are other devices out there good enough for the job, and not everybody is so stupid they can't work the MP3 player on their current phone, so why pay £270 to have it simplified?

well in the UK you guys are getting ripped off at that price..

right now the cost is $399 USD for an 8 gig in USA plus 8-10% in taxes..

that makes it aggressively priced and very appealing... if I'm to choose between a $400 iphone and $700 n95 8 gig the choice is quite simple..

if someone pays nearly 300 quit for what amounts to a crippled fashion phone, they've got no option other than to love it.

The price seems reasonable, think of how much the P990i was when that was released. Alot more than £260 which is what you could get the iphone for (from Luke) shameless plug, lol. Everyone has different tastes, the iPhone will be perfect for me because i'll have a camera, ipod and phone all in one, it's not for everybody.

Your forgetting, this £269 isn't a sim free price, this is the handset price in addition to the contract.

The N95 cost no more than £90 on a £35/month contract at it's highest. The 8800 Sirocco was £190 on a £35/month contract, so what makes the price tag of the iphone so much higher?

And by saying you'll have a camera, phone and music player etc all in one. Fine, but you'll have a camera thats next to useless and would only be good for MMS, if the phone had it, and the phone part is crippled beyond belief for that price.

In my eyes, it has no justification and never will. Looking at the supposedly endless list of features and the only thing I see that is of any advantage is the Visual Voicemail thingy.

@Dragon Eye and all,

That price of £269.99 includes 17.5% VAT which is charged by the UK Government, also what people seem to be forgetting is that the price plans include unlimited Data although it does not mean truly unlimited but at this point in time i can see now where that states what 02 deem as fair usage.

It also includes unlimited WiFi use at Hot Spots but yet again i am sure this is also with a fair usage policy and again is as yet undefined.

Personally i think the unlimited Data as it s only over EDGE is really only of use for the free push E-Mail as IMO for Web browsing i really don't think it is going to be fast enough but until i see this personally in action i will concede i may be wrong and it may not be as slow as i think.

In which case the unlimited Data deal is not so bad and should be valued at as least £7.50 pm of the Tariff. The same goes for the unlimited WiFi as again as far as i am aware their are not that many free Hot Spots and the charges for using Hot Spots in the UK is expensive IMO so again you need to allow at least £10pm month for the WiFi part of the package.

So if you now deduct those two costs from the £35pm tariff it comes down to just £17.50pm which IMO is quite reasonable for the allowances offered.

I should point out at this time whilst i am quite interested in the iPhone and what it can do i have no intention of getting one from 02 on one of there tariffs. If i do decide to get one i will buy it for £269 from an Apple store and just unlock it via hacking once confirmed it works on this new version of firmware that will be on the UK models.

@Daedalus85

As i pointed out in an earlier post what you may feel is a necessary app many others may not for instance in over 20 years of using devices i have never sent or received a single MMS so this missing feature means nothing to me as i won't miss it as never use it. Same goes for the light SMS features as i don't send SMS messages ever and receive very few of which only the odd one is even of interest or importance. Same goes for the limited bluetooth functionality i don't beam or receive files via bluetooth and hate A2DP so again both of these missing functions mean nothing to me. People really need to stop judging everything by what they want and need and start looking at the bigger picture where some of these things may just not be important other users.

I suppose now i am the owner of my first Apple product an iPod and am just pointing out why i think the iPhone isn't as completely useless as some are saying I'm now a Apple Fan Boy am I.

stay AWAY from the refurbs if you can. They often end up with light scratches and a bit of glue on the screen. The box is much nicer though
