Guys,
My reply comes with some authority, since I am closely involved with the design.
No. There is no performance difference between 8GB and any other capacity point. You should expect ~3MB/sec write, ~12MB/sec read performance. You will not see this in the handset - only in a USB 2.0 capable reader.
The reason - the M2 is a collection of several memory die. In SanDisk M2 specifically - write and read operations are done on 1 die at a time. So performance is die-based. Whether you have a stack of 1-die (1GB) or a stack of 8-die (8GB) the performance is the same. Format time will vary, since formatting must touch each memory location. But performance is the same. Access time - same. Everything - same.
There is higher performance available to the M2 with multiple (concurrent) die operation - but this kills the power budget of 100mA.

update - I was measuring 3.2MB/sec read, 9.8MB/sec write today on 8GB. Must be the firmware.

That's great! p1i can use 8GB m2, but how much the m2 of 8GB. I'm from china ,the biggest is 2GB in china. 4GB is hard to find.
