The fastport is HUGE!
Grab a w910 in your hand (lovely phone) and then connect any hpm-XX to its fastport (terrible solution)...
You will understad what I mean...

Sorry but that is not correct the Nokia's also include a bundled 3.5 m jack equipped handsfree unit so you still plug into the 3.5 port and can plug your own headphones in with the addition of controls and a microphone for talking.

I have to agree with you on the headphone connector on the phones.

I love my W880i to bits, but the headphone connector is a bit bulky and also in an awkward place. I would have preferred a jack at the bottom rather than the one on the side. The side location isn't that practical and aesthetically it's more noticeable than a connector at the bottom would be. And why no cover to close the connector when not in use? That would be safer and look better... (Does anyone know whether there are (after market) rubber covers available by now?)

That said, it's pretty impressive how slim the phone is, and I realize they probably had to puzzle quite a bit to make everything fit.

Best solution is probably to use a nice headset like HBH-DS980 and get rid of all the wires. It should only be a bit cheaper...

3.5mm audio out jack.... SE should have included them when they came up with W800 and should have kept them in atleast their walkman lineup...

Well, at present, bluetooth stereo speakers have come up and soon more will come with better performance... New car's audio systems are also having bluetooth and in a year or two they will be more mass market as well... SE have also started releasing portable bluetooth speakers now and more are yet to come... Only Home Theaters and Home Music Sysytems are lacking bluetooth as present... But that might also change in the coming few years...

So what I think is that after a year we may not actually require a 3.5mm jack as much as we do now... So a 3.5mm jack on the headphones might be fine and though SE might very well come up with 3.5mm jack phones in coming years, they won't be needed after few years...

Just my view...

But, I think the post is about the now, or even 6 months ago. In the cell phone world, 1 year in the real world is like 3 years in the cell phone world. Cell phone technology is moving at a break neck speed, and it speaks heaps of SE's unwillingness to roll with the times. Sure, in 1 years time Bluetooth MAY take a foot hold in the average family living room, but keep in mind that it'll be the AVERAGE CONSUMER and cost that decides if that happens or not, and not the average Esato user. How long has the Next Gen HD disk format war been going on without a clear winner, anyone? HDTV adoption rates? What's wrong with wanting a 3.5 mm headphone jack in a phone now? For the prices that SE and other premium cellphone makers like Nokia charge, I don't think that it's too much to ask. Why should I wait 1 year from now?... I want my tech now! I want to use it NOW. Everyone on this site is always saying "wait another year" or "next quarter SE will have something better"..... YOU ARE the consumer. What a horrible mentality to fall into. You pay SE top dollar for their products, and not the other way around. If you honestly think that SE proprietary connections are there because of tech restrictions, well look at Sony's history of implementing proprietary technology: Beta, Mini Disc, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Micro, UMD, and now Blu Ray... It's all about control and the all mighty dollar! They are a corporation in the business of making money after all, don't fool yourselves.

Give me a slimline compact Nokia phone with a 3.5mm audio jack, superb 8gb (plus) music player with great UI and usb charging and i'll be happy. Has to be affordable and have basic stuff like a calendar, alarms, security auto locks, good battery life. I don't want web browsing because mobile internet is so slow (even 3g). The screens of most mobiles are too small for browsing and units are fiddly and slow to operate (bar the iPhone which fares much better). Larger units are too thick and heavy in the main. The ones that are slim have no touch screen. The slimmest touchscreen phone is an iPhone which is not as thin as it first appears and not a spot on some other slimline units.

The Nokia 5310 looks like a close contender, but has limited storage and comes in garish colours. What's wrong with a 6300 style finish?

iPhone looks good, but only works with O2 and you have to use iTunes. Doesn't support many audio/video formats. This is a great shame because it is an awesome piece of kit from a UI and stlying point of view. Not so sure about the built in battery. Do they expect users to throw away their £500 unit after 2-3 years when the battery dies? No option for a longlife battery and you can't carry a spare. How dumb is that??

There are new handsets out later this year; Nokia 5130 and 6303 Classic. Both have 3.5mm jacks, but no usb charging, just the thin Nokia charger pin type. Neither look very pretty, but the 6303 has my vote. There is a 6700 coming out too, which looks really great, but no 3.5mm jack socket! The 6600 slide has the perfect form factor but only a 2.5mm jack.
Seems like Nokia just like to tease us! Nokia appear to regard a 3.5mm jack socket as a non-business user item. They haven't it seems, worked out that business people have to sit on trains and buses and like to unwind to their favourite music and video as well as the rest of the mobile owning public out there.

Smart phones IMHO are trying to much to be all singing all dancing units, but rarely work well. I have a pda that does many things, but does none of them particularly well. Unless you have a keyboard, a decent sized touch screen and a robust, fast processor, the whole thing just remains a bit of a gadget. A slick UI is vital.

My motto is to keep it simple - don't need or want to pay for superfluous clutter like gps or wifi that turns a handset into a brick. But it shocks me that out of the huge choice of phones even just Nokia produce and after all this time, that there is no simple music phone that meets the criteria stated above.

Please let me know if such a unit exists. I will be first in the queue.
