well, i have got a better suggestion for u people, just change ur desktop colour settings to 16-bit, n see the diff.(or if ur usin 16-bit, try putting 32-bit).
U will find soo much difference.
So obviously there is much more colour depth in 16million colours than 262k. But unless n until u dont get used to 16million colour screen, u wont be able to find the diff b/w 16m and 262k.
btw, its quite a shame that x1 has only 65k colors!! Do all windows phone have 65k??? cuz all htc fones i saw so far have only 65k!

Stop blaming windows mobile for the shortage in hardware specs our dear x1 has. windows mobile is capable of displaying more than 65k colours. it is probably too hardware demanding for the x1 to do it.

Instead of jumping down my throat, how bout next time, you post me a link, stating that WM does indeed support more than 65k, and a reason as to why no WM phone has more than 65k colour screens?

chill dude, sorry if i sounded to abrupt with my reply. that was not the intention. it is just that so many people were saying it without knowing and that was getting on my nerves.
here is the official microsof info on palette support of windows mobile it supports up to 32 bits:

here is an article written back in 2005 that better explains the reasons why many manufacturers don't go thru the trouble of making their WM devices capable of handling 18 bit (252k colors) as opose to 16 bit (65k colors), it states the difference is almost unnoticeable and not worth the hardware sacrifices (memory).

I would have expected at least 24 bit (16M colors) from what
calls "the ultimate media experiance" device. That would have been a smart move, coz frankly having a wvga with 16bit color is abit of a waste.
i also searched at PDADB.net for devices with the following search criteria: windows mobile 6 and 18 bit (252144 colors) here are the results:

I have a Nokia E51 (just released!) and the screen is horrible. Contrast was poor (very washed out), colors were far too cold, small viewing angles, and low brightness. Meanwhile my "sucky" 256k T650i's screen simply put it to shame in every aspect. Just being 16m colors doesn't automatically make the screen better.

i would rather think that it is for the sake of 'completeness', as in when you read the specs sheet paper, you will have the feeling that 'this is the true high end device'. i'm just trying to be honest with myself, i know it very well, i can see that SE's screen change from time to time, from 262K of the K750, K800, W580, W880, K850, W910 and W890 (each has its own unique characteristic), to finally G900 or W980 or Z770. Despite that, i dun feel that they have work hard enough until they implement this 16m colors screen.
I also test their legibility under direct sunlight, i am not sure about the latest one, but i am sure that even K770's screen still does not satisfy me in any way. In this respect, Nokia still does a better job. Ah, SE's japanese phone already have one with 16m color screen.

It's not only a question of colors. It is also a question of brightness for each particular color. Say that each of the three base R(ed), G(reen) and B(lue) colors is encoded on 5 bits (which would in total give 32k values), then it is only possible to have 32 brightness values for one color. And the difference between two consecutive brightness values is perfectly visible to the human eye.
At 16M colors, each base color is encoded on 8 bits, leading to 256 brightness values. The difference between consecutive values is now barely distinguishable to the naked eye, except maybe for very well trained people.
By the way, for a 65k screen, both R and B are encoded on 5 bits. G is encoded on 6 bits, simply to fill the 16 bits of a 2 bytes word, and because the human eye is more sensitive to green than to red and blue.

Well I've just turned my PC from 24 bits (doesn't support 32 bit color) to 16 bit and I honestly can't tell the difference. BTW, my K790a's screen really kicked ass when it was released, but any new SE can definitely beat it in brightness, including the ones that aren't even QVGA, like the W610.
