why SE chose Windows? Windows is a techie OS and only audience that SE is like to sell X1 to is this limited group of people. Unlike S60, Windows is unlikely to evolve to a point that mass consumer can feel comfortable using.
if SE has chosen S60 (like Samsung have), then SE can come out with something like G810 and have a better positioning to sell more high-end phone. And SE would have gained a workable user-friendly mass-market non-touchscreen smartphone in its portfolio. And when S60 Touch comes along, it can ride the waves with S60 Touch. With something like 300million installed base of S60 users increasing 70% yearly, SE would have a better chance of selling more phones.
As it stands, SE X1 is unlikely to appeal to the man-in-the-street with its Windows OS. Will it be able to snatch customers from established player like HTC which will likely to launch many more models based on the X1 platform. Not that likely.

when i look around here, in private circles or in the numerous mobile shops where i came around day by day, dont see many uiq devices. mainly nokia, but lately more and more wm devices ( htc ). wm os has got sg, ppl show really much interest for it, imo cos the most ppl has got windows at home on the pc and it makes it life easier, to have the same system on py and mobile. btw nokia shows also interest for wm solutions and that points on its "bonus" ( of wm os ) aswell

Symbian phones may sell better, though most of those people dont use it for business needs. Dont get me wrong, im sure some people do, but as i said above, i think business men/women prefer WM, its certainly more popular amongst 'suited' people

AFAIK, the reason why S60 phones are felt to be more popular was due to the extensive support among the leading manufacturers particularly Nokia. add to that the numerous advertisements made by nokia to promote S60 as well as the Nokia smartphone lineup's technological prowess. In fact I can't even see any WM devices being advertised in my local TV. so now that SE had utilized WM in it's new series WM fate may change i guess. SE brands employs more charisma to the people's eyes than HTC or any WM makers and i can see this as an advent that could even spark the further complement to the the popularity of WM phones in the market.

s60 is more popular only because Nokia phones are more popular. Most of the people who own a Nokia phone with s60, don't actually differentiate the s60 as a smartphone. I know heaps of people who own s60's who don't even realise they can install third party apps.
s60 get's to ride on the coat-tails of Nokia market dominance, not the other way around.
A very real reason SE won't use s60, is to avoid being tied into Nokia development cycles. For example, why would SE want to wait for s60 to bring out touch? There is already a touch ready WM or UIQ option.
Also, if SE brought out an s60 phone they would have to do extensive development to the UI to avoid reminding anyone of "Nokia" (there is no way they will want to market an SE branded "Nokia"). They might as well go with WM - WM is more recognisable in the general market as a "smartphone" interface. Some might think that no one likes WM but that is only their own opinion, the opinion of those who are so used to a hardscreen smartphone that they can't see any other possibility
WM is a strong drawcard for people who like touchscreen interfaces. It has a common interface across platforms, and this appeals to people. It has the strongest app support of all flavours of smartphone. I think if the X1 and G series are successful it will show once and for all that the general public are interested in touchscreen, and that it's not a high end domain of odd old fashioned business men stuck in the past.
