"That way one could easily recognise an SE phone."

so you've just agreed with me, and this is the only part of your post which has any validity.
buy yourself a pair of glasses if you think that SEs phone range is the most varied

You've missed my point.

i've understood your point perfectly. if you can more readily recognise an SE, that equates to them having more in common with each other than other manufacturers.
being able to immediately recognise a particular brand is not possible in 90-100% of cases with other manufactures, as it is with SE.
what you will notice with SEs is that there is only very minor changes between phones - they may change the shape of the buttons which distinguishes it from another SE looking almost exactly the same. there is rarely, if ever, a case with SE where the whole phone is different to anything that went before so that it looks unique from anything that went before. the sum total of differences between any new SE release and any of the ones prior to that amounts to 1 or 2 minor cosmetic changes (eg a change of button shape, and nothing more. a repositioning of 2 of the buttons, and nothing more. a change of colour, and nothing more. etc). the basic dimensions and layout remaining the same.

i can't believe that you actually believe that SE have the most variation in their design.

Right, so tell me how does any other manufacturer do a better job at design variety?

as you wish. take the prism phones from nokia.
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_7900_crystal_prism-2225.php

show me a previous nokia phone that looked similar to it, mentioning the aspects of them which are common which would make it instantly recognisable as a nokia? for example, is there anything about it where you could cite at least 10 other models that have that exact same appearance that screams out "nokia"?

then do the same for the following:
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_8800_sapphire_arte-2176.php
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n96-2253.php
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6650_t_mobile-2311.php
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n76-1822.php

i could go on and on,......

now it's your turn. show me 5 sony ericssons that have no resemblance to any other SE in such a way as to make it difficult to recognise it as an SE and which has totally different dimensions AND key layout AND everything else etc?

Although I disagree with you about the N96, here are my picks:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/k810i?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]ones/overview/w380?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/w350i?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/r306i?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/z770i?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/w850i?cc=gb&lc=en
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nes/overview/k850i?cc=gb&lc=en

And just about every other SE phone, as they all look very different to me.
Maybe you're confused by the fact that, say, the design of Walkman phones follow a certain "walkman style". Or the Cyber-shots - they do, too.
IMO, SE's designers are doing a fantastic job at creating new handset designs, while stilll following the style of the respective (sub-) brand.

I have no clue why its so upsetting to some people on this forum if you say that SE designs are repetitive. It IS repetitive, so are other phone manufacturers designs. WIthout sticking to one line of design styling the manufacturer looses its identity as well has lots more work to do in R&D if every phone is going to be a revolution rather than an evolution.

Lets do a quick analysis of the main design styles followed by Manufacturers.

1. Nokia: Their N Series have recently taken a rather "European" line imo, you can see the similarity in all their N Series products from the key shapes to their keypads and their lines. E-Series follow a similar patter, when you look at the phone you know its E-Series or N-Series. This is a good thing. So do their Prism series etc..

2. Samsung: Their metal series follow one line of design and their lower ends another.

3. Motorola: Their RAZR type design of course, they started the whole thing of evolutionary design, I dont care who wants to disaggree with me on this, its true, pure and simple.

4. SE, theyve got their candybars following one design philosophy based on the K750/T610, their clamshells a bit different, but you know they're SE once you see them. Mind you theres nothing evolutionary in each passing phone, you know that things have been carried over. When I mean evolutionary I mean look at the iPhone thats one heck of a design, SE have'nt come close to that, nor have other manufacturers.

5. HTC: They've got their touch line up, you know a touch is a touch when you see it. And their other TyTn2 model which is an evolution on the TyTn, you know they're HTC LOL!.

Imagine if a manufacturer did'nt have an identity, would be extremely stupid imo.
