Ok back to the top this topic goes, this post is really aimed at AD but i'm also curious on other peoples inputs.
When i was charging the phone today (charger was behaving itself) i noticed a buzzing sort of sound emitting from the charger (the unit that plugs into the mains) it sounded as if the wire was shorting. The sound wasn't loud it was a slight buzzing that i noticed only because i dropped a pen next to the charger unit.
I will stress the point the sound was very very quiet it is as if there was a short, and also i will point out that the sound only occured when the charger was pluged into the device with the mains switched on.
As soon as i unplugged the device the buzzing stopped even though the mains power switch was on.
I contacted SE, they said to send it to they repair centre, which i'll do when i get a backup charger. But i just want to know if anyone else has noticed a buzzing sound emitting from their charger?

Hi there
All transformers will have a certain amount of vibration when in use, if it was a continuous low buzz then I really don't think it's too much to be concerned about. If however the noise was stuttering (Idon't know how better to put it), then this would indicate a fault of an electrical nature.
The sound is caused by the fact that mains electricity is in the form of alternating current at 50hz (cycles per seccond - within the human range of hearing). In a transformer, this causes a rapidly fluctuaiting magnetic field, which causes a kinetic vibrational effect within the components of the unit. As to why the sound stops when you unplug your phone, I believe this is due to the fact that no energy is then being drawn through the system, or it could be that what you're hearing is the rectifier (the bit that converts AC to DC), which would definately be inactive if the circuit to the phone was broken.
Now it could be that this effect is more pronounced because something is loose inside the casing, but if it doesn't rattle at all if you shake it, then it's probably fine.

Hi there, thanks for the reply well i had a little shake around with the charger and everything seemed fine there was no rattling sound from the unit, so it could very well be as you said the fact the charger is operating, and there was no stuttering, it was a continuous buzz.
I'm not that annoyed at the charger messing up actually i mean £10 aint a big deal but the fact that it did so within 7 or so months is a bit annoying, and the thing that concerns me more than anything is the prolonged use of it could either damage the phone or worse if indeed it is faulty. Ah well weekend's on the way, will go into town and pick up a charger i think then get this one replaced on warrenty.
