Nope,N96 has a new platform and slightly different target.
N96 has hardware acceleration for VGA h264 at 30fps and maybe also VC-1,not entirely sure about this tho. (hint DVB-H )
Compare it to N95's H264 QVGA/CIF.
On top of that its FP2 device, according to nokia it has longer video and music playback capability.

Just like I mentioned in one of the recent topics. The thread's title could have been "camera comparison between N82, U900 and G900." But thats not the case here.

Anyways, G900 isn't a perfect phone and does have few shortcomings, like the camera, processor, lack of EDGE and HSDPA. But otherwise it's a great phone and those who compare it with N82, keep in mind that G900 is quite compact in comparison. For the size of the phone I do not think it is a dissappointment but definitely a good all rounder. As for U900 I think it will be atleast as costly as G900 or N82 and even it lacks in features compared to N82 and G900.

So, are the new G series just the same platform as the P990/P1 just dressed differently? Everyone keeps expecting something spectacular from SE but they seem to warm up and serve the same stuff for the last two years.
SE fan boys don't like to hear this but in the mean time its competitors are improving on their specifications. SE is running out of time to come up with innovative products. Nothing I've seen so far from SE is innovative.

@makbil- that's exactly what it is! SE are trying to make money out of their old technology that is still lying around since the p990i.

I had a play with the G phones (if memory serves me right) at the Store day on High Street Kensington, they were really nice phones and while I couldn't put the phone through all its paces i must admit it was styled in such a way to appeal to a more mass market.

The fact it has a d-pad like thing shows the intention to appeal to a wider audience, coming from a P1 onto the G series i completely forgot about the touchscreen and found myself using the d-pad. I think the important thing to remember is that these are not flagship devices (which i guess isn't saying much anymore) but I feel these are a way of SE increasing their UIQ userbase.

It is upsetting to see the same tech being rehashed over and over, but how much do you think it bothers normal consumers? When i got the P1 it was my first SE/UIQ device, so to me it was a change from the dumbphones i've owned. My guess is SE looks at the market and thinks if we can get more people onto the UIQ platform even if it means releasing the same tech in a new package for the average user then it gives us a wider target audience for our flagship UIQ devices.

Too be fair, the fact many of us are on this forum does suggest we have slightly more knowledge about tech than many other consumers so it comes as no surprise we feel the phone is a disappointment.
For the majority of consumers they see 5mp camera, slim good looking package and touchscreen and they jump at the opportunity at owning the device.

after reading the MR review... i can clearly say that the lens on the G900 heavily suffers from smudge on the lens (less likely) or the sensor is a defective one (more likely)

this kind of horrible defects (spread ed light on the whole image) usually are visible when one of the above mentioned occures.

so i say that the release version will have a much better quality than this.

(but i think even with a good condition sensor... it will never catch the N82 in terms of image quality)

Yep, for me camera isnt that important.
If i want to have real shot, i have my canon eos.

I just like the little tweak. Of the UI homescreen, new media player a-la A2 ui, touch note, xpict and track id. That really suits me as average joe

I'm impatient enough to wait to lay may hand on the red ones

@5nak3- good post there mate! The problem with 'newcomers' to phones like the G900 is when a friend flashes a nokia n82 and suddenly their phone feels utterly outdated. The sad fact here is that SE was in the leading position 2 or 3 years ago but became complacent and thought/hoped their name alone will carry them through. After 10 with Ericsson/Sony Ericsson I've left them but I hope to be back as soon as they get their house in order.
