I was looking forward to this phone. Its not bad but two things rumored were 3.5mm jack and VGA 30 fps capture, neither of which are there. The VGA capture seems to be on purpose, though gsm arena seems to think it has it and all about symbian is sure it doesn't.

The spec sheet briefly mentions it - but its still preliminary. I'm sure its capable of doing it (spec states 12fps); but I doubt Nokia will get it there. 3.5mm Jack being rumored? More like hoped when the device is so Slim. You may consider the RIM BB Bold. Me I'm going for the E71.

The Nokia specs page list it as VGA 22fps.

@prom

All about symbian seem to be sure it qvga 15 fps and even say don't believe nokia's spec sheet. About the 3.5mm I guess it was hope more than rumor but what's 1 more mm. Could have put it in. Anyway, at least the jack is recessed rather than a big fastport jack sticking out on the side.

@Prom1

Hey you leave the insults about what is quite simply the most powerful and advanced Symbian smart phone out.

As to it's huge size it is only slightly longer and wider than a TyTN 2 and is thiner so considering you get a glorious 4" screen and 57 key QWERTY the price you have to pay is a little size and weight. Not forgetting for a smart phone a great if not class leading 3.2 megapixel camera and 30fps VGA video recording all powered by a 1500aMh Li-polymer battery.

@all,

As much as i loved my E61 the fact the E71 has a smaller screen rules it out for me. My next device may well be the BB Thunder and if that doesn't work out then I'm quite happy to wait for the E90 replacement late 2009. As so far nothing announced or launched even comes close to my E90.

Marc

Sorry, Marc. I wasn't dissing the Symbian just the size of the E90 ... but you're right it IS the most powerful E-Series and it stands up VERY well to the N95 ... I'd say its better. I'll bet you and everyone else cannot WAIT till its replacement. Imagine same specs, 2000Mah battery or close, along with OLED outter screen, Liquid-Lens for the camera (same specs just more power efficient = bonus), and imagine it ALL in a slimmer case?!

Maybe even with Magnesium as the metal of choice (light, dissapates heat better than aluminum, and stronger). Now how about having a video conferencing camera inside the open flip as well .

For me I love the E71. For business' its a good move. Now if only Nokia's IntelliSync devision updates the FULL suite (client incl) for Novel & IBM Notes Domino server as well Now we'll have a good challenger to RIM on ALL platforms. well at least an inkling.

EDIT: From pg 88 from the Nokia_E71 User Guide.

i Dont think lack of 3.5mm jack is big let down, u can always use stereo bluetooth headset, it works very well with even my 2yr old P990, and i think vga
recording may be just not included, becuase to differentiate it from nseries, that would be hit on neries devices, like n78,n82 etc if it does multimedia
better such as camera n audio with 3.5mm jack
And not to forget the talk times of bold and e71

Bold
65k screen
and 5hrs of talk time
2mp

E71
16 mln screen
10.30 hrs of talk time, thats almost twice as bold
3mp
Fm radio
less thinner, less heavier

nokia has reduced sreen size because, there are too much people who complain about size and weight.nokia just has to do it for the most of people

technical-expert.

@tech ... careful of quoting talk times.

E71 talk times you've quoted (10.5hrs) is for GSM networks, not on 3G signals. Bold has some good specs as well, but when you eliminate it being used on the BES then some features are gone, not even options are listed.

I'm curious to see if Google's Calendar will allow for synchronization and what protocol it'll use. Is IntelliSync an open source protocol?! If so and they choose to implement that OR support it, not only will Andriod have free busy lookup, but so will the many E-Series! Not sure the BB Bold will/can integrate this way; they did use to license IntelliSync for the desktop client, maybe they still do.

Hi Prom1

There is already a Video Camera on the inside of the internal screen for Video calling, not that i have ever used or ever will but it is there.

Here is what Michal Jerz said in his E90 review

" On the left side, above the Send/End buttons, there is a secondary low-res (QCIF) video camera for video calls only."

Rather than a Magnesium shell i would much prefer Titanium as just love that metal.
