hey matt , is gps the only important feature for you in choosing the phone or do you u have some other preferences also?

As everybody knows the iPhones (V1 & 3G) lose any spec comparison on paper. But there is more to the iPhone than a poor camera and propriety software. You really need to try one out and see if it suits you.
Otherwise G900 is an option as is C902, C905 (when released) and of course N95 8GB.

Oh you are sooo right there, who would want to be able to write an email on a G900 when you can tap it out letter by letter on an Iphone! And that Bluetooth stuff is clearly had its day or Stevie Baby would have enabled multipoint on the Iphone right?
The Iphone is a triumph of marking over common sense but only IMHO of course

With respect it is not, TomTom does it all including using it as a pedestrian but you didn't make it clear, price & pedestrian mode are your key purchasing deciders.
As I said before The latest version of wayfinder allows you to download maps so you will not have to use GPRS or 3G data streaming and as with almost 100% of on phone GPS systems it will allow you to select pedestrian mode
have you actualy tried searching the web yet? if not try the following Google searches took me less than 2 mins to come up with loads of options!

With respect, that's nonsense. If we're talking "technical inferiority" then let's look at the G900's inferior processor, data connectivity (where's the HSDPA?), and massively inferior screen, shall we?
The G900 is a reasonable tool, but as yet another iteration of the same dead UIQ platform from 2005, it's really nothing special. The Iphone certainly has its limitations, but it's a vastly superior beast on any technical level.
Personally, if the OP wants a good smartphone for TomTom or similar, he needs to be looking more at Windows Mobile. Many WM handsets have internal GPS, some come with suitable software built in, and adding something like TomTom is very easy and relatively cheap. WM has all the advantages of UIQ as a more open and mature smartphone OS, while most handsets are technically far more advanced than the G900, sharing more of the up to date technology of the Iphone like GPS, HSDPA, and VGA screens in the latest crop.

so, to make it as simple as possible: go for the iphone (3G) if you don't mind the on screen keyboard, the steep tariffs and the over-the-air-only maps. Oh, and if you don't plan to use a wireless stereo headset.
take the SE phone if you don't mind the external gps unit and the small screen. with the SE you get to choose whether you want over-the-air maps or on memory card maps. in the second case no data connection is required.
A word about tomtom:
the software is fine on pretty much all uiq3 phones. the major price driver is in fact the map you buy. as you noted, western europe is quite expensive. UK only maps should be available for less, but i did not check. using tomtom as a pedestrian is something i do quite often. you can adjust route planning accordingly and also the display.

So I too recommend the G900. IMO the iPhone is crap, the interface is stunning but that's it, it lacks features. You can't even stream via bluetooth to headphones using a2dp or even buy tunes of iTunes over the 3g network. But if you worried about cost then forget GPS on a phone to be honest. Tom Tom 6 costs in initial outlay and then you buy a gps unit, the iPhone currently has NO gps software available, Tom Tom are the only ones rumoured to be launching a product for the iPhone. This leaves you with Google Maps, great if your on foot but forget it if your driving.
Do you want to use GPS whilst driving around London or walking?
So if i have a Bluetooth GPS and this:

No, I want a nice phone with a nice screen, decent camera, all the usual stuff, *and* ability to use GPS!
I'm not as nerdily techie as a lot of people on here so it would never have occurred to me to search for UIQ3 on Google, but I'll try it anyway!

At the end of last year I bought a month old P1 with TomTom 6 Nav and a GPS unit for £175 from ebay - it was perfect...
Having sung it's praises particularly with all the new mods and hacks continually to a mate who was considering aa G900 he went to look on ebay and ended up buying the same thing - unused if I remember correctly inc TomTom 6 and GPS unit for £135!!!
You can't tell me thats not value for money!
You will not need a data connection with TomTom 6 Nav as stated previously and you can set it for walking mode. It's not perfect... but it way ahead of whatever comes in second place
