I was so sure that I would buy the 5800 but after this announcement I'm getting the N97 no matter what.
You might want to wait till MWC 2009 and then make a decision

Assuming it has similar hardware as 5800,They are still using the freescale platform.
I can only think that integration between hardware and os is much tighter than ever before with S60 5th Edition.
and 48gigs!
Another important pointer is that, there is another device coming soon that will be focused on imaging.

I like the way it says ships H1 2009. Thats anywhere between 1st Jan and 31st June. Couldnt they have narrowed it down a bit.
That's the only downside to this device, right NOW, it eats the X1 for breakfast, give it 6 months to hit the shops, and thats another matter entirely.

Considering the X1 has better specs than this thing. How does it eat the X1 for breakfast??
Upsides of the N97 are 5 mp cam and a 3.5 inch display(with a pathetically low resolution) and maybe 32gb rom.

I know but anything highend from SE or Nokia that will be announced in MWC will most likely come out in fall or winter 09 but I need a multimedia oriented device before July.
I'm hoping that they can bring out the N97 in that time.
I might reconsider if those upcoming phones introduce sometotally new technology.

well all i have to say is nokia has carefully analyzed the market situation and come out with excellent device,Unlike xperia which had several revision both in ram and software from early February, with long development process, which was the only high end smart phone product in SE 2008 Line up
Built in memory of 400 Mb on a multimedia device was a really great mistake done by SE, Here Nokia clearly understand the need for bigger inbuilt memory and had taken brilliant decision of putting 32 Gb memory with opportunity to expand the memory to another 32 Gb. It makes better multimedia device than so called xperia
Brilliant Tilt screen compared to Xperia which was very over hyped for its Curvy/Tilted Design, In this case Nokia has done brilliantly so that u can put ur phone on desk and us it as desktop without having to hold it everytime
A 3.5 Inch Wides screen display with 16 Million colours.A 5mp camera with Dual led xeon flash & Vga Recording -Mpeg4 (which was very Poorly implemented in xperia in 3gp standards, with horrible quality, And one could not excuse the mediocre 3,2 mp camera of xperia which even disappointed greatly during daylight )
And Proximity sensor which switches of the screen during calls.
And one could forgive the recent complaints from the SE users, regarding the low ring volume & poor call quality And SE doesn't make no exception with xperia either.Once again Nokia had done very well here with stereo speakers & also in many of there N and E Series Phones. So that no matter wherever u are , u never miss a call.
Combined to all these the biggest concern of SE and other prospective users was, How good is SE with Windows mobile.WM has many negative feedback among user, which includes complexity and ease of use which had set back .
Here again Nokia has done brilliantly by using symbian s60 os, Familiar around the world with nearly 50 percent market share.
Adding to the equation SE has had a heritage of using slower processors compared to other manufacturers which had led to serious complains among SE user due to their initial a2 platform phones such as w910 & k850.And they were incompetent with their own uiq platform which started with P990 and ended with P1 and G900, Combined with slower process and lesser rams. This another reason which had put many user think twice about getting xperia, which always had weak processors and limited ram .Unlike Nokia which had dealt with the ram issues by providing additional ram and demand paging from N82 and n95 ownwards.Combined with all these the high price of SE X1 puts many to desire.
Overall a well thought out device from Nokia.Understanding the multimedia market Segment. Almost having every Feature a Multimedia Phone needs to have, and having it to the maximum, without compromising on any features , will definitely excite & thrill multimedia users .

Goof-ups from Nokia:
1. The joystick/d-pad on the keyboard is on the left side. What a dumb move! Anyone who's used the E90 or the Communicators will know what I'm talking about.
2. Tiny space bar in the bottom-right corner. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Nokia?!?
3. Where's the app store?? Nokia can't expect this device to take on the might of Apple and the iPhone with something that doesn't have a dedicated app store.
4. The N97 does not seem to have the latest iteration of Nokia Maps (v3.0).
5. No mention of a dedicated graphics chip. Has Nokia killed the N95's line of successors?
