My K850 runs on latest FW 035 and I modded everything in it. I never had BROD though its one of the first ones around, October 07. It freezes and hangs regulary, take out battery, insert it and its working again. This happens 6 times a day or not for a few weeks. Nothing to say about that. But I still love the looks and feel of it.

My K850 is on latest firmware and its had BROD twice or thrice while on R1fa035, buying a K850 is just a risk IMO, rather get your brother a phone that hasnt had so many complaints eg. C510, C901 or even a W705 or W595.

I am running on 035 for about a year and i can say its bug free firmware. You should go for it. You said, your brother is going to use it and he doesnt know how to flash. So i think he is not going to use it that intensively like i do. Right now, i am typing this post from my K850i with out any slowness and meantime there is one downloading is going on. So no problem with multitasking.
i love this phone. With modded cam drive, it takes really nice pic. Just last week, i snapped a pic of my daughter and got its print in 8*12 size, got it laminated and now it is on my bedrooms wall. Nobody believe that it is from my phone.
Go for it.

i'm not guarantee it will be free of BROD.. but with a2uploader, you can fix it in less than 10 minute
(gw emang hampir gak pernah main ke indonesia corner bro. btw, klo ada masalah sama K850 nya, main2 aja ke FP oke

well, i do agree that K850i is not 100% free from BSOD but that only happened prior to R1FA035...
what i can say is, K850i is a superb handphone and you will not regret buying/using it.
btw i never experienced any BSOD....lucky me
