Having manual controls would be perfect.

I don`t remember if it was possible in older firmwares
or it is just possibility of camera and driver,but
now it is possible to adjust visual brightness of images with flash.
Just use EV control to set brighter or darker image.
ISO remains 200,Shutter Speed remains 1/125.

Whole above feature can solve the problem of Document or Macro mode.

P.S.:
BTW, C901 can set ISO50 in auto mode and good light...
