It's typical of Sony to half-arse this year and after a few generations they make something decent otherwise there's always something wrong like overheating, bad night shots, the super slow motion came and then went, the tall aspect came and went, and so on. They throw ideas around and wait to see what sticks.

Product planers don't think hard enough. Here is a perfect solution to cater to both casuals and pros

1. Xperia 1VI should have had shutter button as well as circular shortcut hw button (like PRO-I)
2. Two camera apps: New Camera app found on 1VI and Pro bundle app that combines Photo Pro, Video Pro and Cinema Pro into one icon instead of three icons
3. Long press camera button launches new Camera app. Long press on shortcut button launches Pro App and with every click on the shortcut button it cycles between Photo Pro, Video Pro and Cinema Pro. Long press again shortcut button to return to new Camera app.

That's it! Simple as that. Everyone is satisfied!

Remember I said new cam app was 💩?

Now you guys see.

Gsmarena photos show huge sharpening applied and awful color science, very iphone of them.

I have zero idea why pre-orders in Taiwan are so higher than mark 5, far better phone.

They keep on switching focus in camera department and here is a brief retrospective:

XZ was losing ground in photography to competition, so they switched the strategy away from photo to video with XZ2 and that's the reason why they introduced HLG video, super slow motion, while Cinema Pro app went into development inspired by Sony F cinema cameras.

Somewhere between XZ3 and XZ4 the whole management has changed, and they once again switched from video priority to photography being priority. That made OG Xperia 1 a generation gap device much like 1VI is right now. Fortunately enough Cinema Pro was ready by then, so they didn't kill it (but they never improved it either).

With 1II transition to photography was completed with new sensor and new Photo Pro app. New management EOLed Album app due to software development cost cutting measures. Maybe even the old management would have done the same, we would never know.

Then suddenly two years later with PRO-I they shifted to Vlogging video due to spiking sales of their ZV camera. They introduced XDCAM inspired Video Pro app tailored to vlogging crowd.

With 1IV they brought the same vlogging features to more affordable package compared to PRO-I and I guess that didn't go too well. 1V tried to remedy that with new sensor and some cool tricks, even the PRO-I hardware design trickled down to 1V but I would assume that wasn't enough. Xperia team probably couldn't support both photo pro users and video pro users at the same time. I guess it's one demanding customer target group, so they threw the towel.

So today with 1VI they are going back to early XZ days, they are shifting their focus once again to consumer camera app experience.

I'm a total camera novice but the way I see it, Sony camera department should not be involved with Xperia. They have different objectives and budgets. Sony cameras are specialist devices, you can't have that on a mainstream phone. From Xperia, you can't put a specialist camera in a phone without making so many compromises that it turns out rubbish anyway. The Xperia Pro is garbage.

Xperia needs a hard reset again. Bezels on the tall aspect ratio was fine, but now with the standard aspect ratio, the camera punch hole looks better. Camera apps are a mess. The UI looks so dated, no Sony style at all, just a mess of ideas all round. Also, new phones for that price have to compete against this year's flagships, but it has to be better than last year's ones that have had a price cut. There's no reason to get an 1vi over 1v at all, none whatsoever. The price of Sony phones is outrageous. I tried the Nothing 2 and found the experience so sleek and smooth, also tried the Rog 8 and thought wow, multimedia experience on it was amazing.

I think, in all Xperia 1 series, Xperia 1V is the best in every department. The photos from Xperia 1V always incredibly better than all competition. I couldn't find any fault with it. I skip Xperia 1VI because of that. Completely satisfied with 1V. I think if they just take it from there and add more features or introduce new lenses will be sufficient.

well, so far mark 6 in Japan has highest evaluation of all 6 gens, except photos (I agree mark 5 does better).
I am using 40 Neo that costed me equivalent to 329 euros (caneel bay, I was gonna get Soothing Sea but in person it is way lighter than photos I did not like) , so far very satisfied, I just wish it did not have screen hole and had imx776 instead of ov50a.

10 mark 6 should have been more like Edge 50 Pro, even if sony had to ask €560-580.

With 7g3, 8/256GB ddr5, usb 3.1, imx890 (24mm) + imx563 (16mm) + imx663 (60mm), hdr screen.

Sony has posted a video to compare battery endurance of mark 6 vs mark 5.
Video playback test.

When mark 5 got to 0%, mark 6 still had 68%.
