I can see why Sony did it, if they force people to buy Memory stick duos rather than SD/MMC/Whatever then it raises Sonys revenue... however, I think it's a little unfair to release something like this and not have the capacity range of your competitors and also to be around twice as expensive!
That's a little "slap-in-the-face"-ish...

mleeber... I think you forget that Sony is the leading consumer electronics corporation. From TVs, VCRs, DVDs, camcorders, portable music players, digital cameras, game consoles & sound systems... no other corporation has as much market share under one company.
as much as I don't like the price of the memorystick format, it's nice to know that at LEAST with Sony, the MemoryStick will be somewhat of a standard.
With the current 'standards' manufacturers still don't stick to one format either...so what's the use??? We have CF (Type 1 and 2), MMC, SD, and Smart Media. Investing in one or the other doesn't guarantee interoperability either! If I buy a camera that uses CF, I can't use that on my Palm that uses SD. Nor can I use them on my laptop without an adapter for each format.
At least SE threw in a memstick adapter. Vaios, Clies, Cybershots, Handycams, and even the Wegas use the Memstick... that's a wide range of electronics that use one format. The Duo is backwards compatible, and we all have adapters anyway (seeing as ALL current Duo users are P800 users...Sony made sure everyone got an adapter as well)
I can now use my Duo with a Clie. I can sell my old Memory sticks to people who do NOT need the Duo... I can now change ALL my Memory sticks to the Duo format and maintain interoperability! I can't say the same for Smart Media & MMC...the so-called 'standards'.
It's not a perfect world... in a perfect world... we'd have ONE, and only ONE format for memory. It would be cheap... and future-proof. So far... only Sony has taken the extra steps to make a NEW standard (The Duo) backwards compatible...and gave all early adopters a Duo adapter... so now, my Duos will work with all existing memstick devices as well.
