I have an HBH-60 and it crackled with the week 18 phone. Since the phone also hissed, I returned it. Still waiting to buy a week 23 phone.

I tested a 03W19 (made in China) recently and there was no hissing even with the volume up.

mine is a R3A 03W22 made in China and no hissing sound whatsoever...

to any SE service center and they will fix it.
they add something to the phone ,
i don't remember the name , but when i asked they guy
here , he told me that SE sent them parts
and a new software which really did a great job,,,
now the phones r perect..

If you can't hear the hiss then probably your phone does not hiss, especially if you only got it in the last couple of months.
You find the production date of your phone on the sticker under the phone on the right hand side under the second bard code. Its in the form of 03Wnn where nn is the week number within 2003.
