An old thread but I was surprised how quickly some of you dismissed phone viruses. Sure, they can't spread themselves as well as a computer virus as they'll fail to operate with other phone models in a lot of cases but anything with malicious coding such as to delete messages, send contacts away etc. would be classed as a virus and is still possible except no one really puts the effort into actually making any because it would be worthless for the most part.

Well, i have installed many free java stuff but never encountered a virus. But there r some java games and apps that cause the device to freez. But really there is no harm.

The whole point of Java is that it runs in a 'Virtual Machine' which means the program doesn't have access to your phone outside of the priveledges in the environment - meaning a malicious game can't access your bluetooth / contacts / phone functions / sms.
Rest easy

Totally agree with chaos & audi. Waste of time making a virus for SE java phones. But UIQ & S60, 80, 90 which run on symbian is not a waste of time name have been very effective, simple advice to people is to be smart, dont download every thing u see lol

@korbindallis: Well said. The chances that my P800 will get infected by any virus without my active collusion is near zero, whether via BT, file installation et al.
Here are a few sensible tips:
1. download ALL your apps from credible sources. For me, that means
http://My-Symbian.com and
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk2. set your BT to ask before accepting any connections and files
3. don't believe all you hear about virus infecting phones. Most are media hype.

A friend of mine had the cabir virus on his 6600. Stupid person.
Viruses on S60 phones are very common now, go to sites like
http://zedge.no and their forum is full of people needing to know how to remove the cabir virus.
Some people will accept anything.

Only s60 platforms are susceptible to viruses, and they're no big issue,as antivirus cabirfix and shit loads of apps are available.Your 2Mb(or whatever the t610 internal mem is)of gif, jpeg and midi files are not going anywhere mate.Lol
