For god's sake, stop saying Nokia is lagging behind.
Nokia has already a WCDMA phone on the market (and have had it for a while now). One other coming this quarter. A few EDGE phones on the market, many new ones coming soon (see yesterday). The most popular and highly appreciated mobile phone platform i.e. Series 60. Have sold millions and millions of camera phones worldwide. Have the first mobile gaming device ever made with anything you can think of. Etc etc. Yesterday's releases also add quite much to it, e.g. Series 90 phone with a DVB-H module!

have made good things, but you clearly can't say Nokia is lagging behind them, clearly, or then should just start open your eyes a little bit...
Nokia is lagging behind. Look at the phones on the market today. Nokia phones are using 4096 colours screens 4 channel poly-tones, and most of them still uses the outdated Nokia user-interface although the 7250i is an improvement (I'm not counting the series 60 bricks in this category). Looking at announced phones that will be available Q2 next year and saying Nokia isn't lagging in the market is just wrong. Looking at the phones available in stores today Nokia has technology inferior phones to most manufacturers (not only SE).
Ah.. yes I forgot the "great" Nokia WCDMA phone that is available... hmm.. (sorry great was quite far from the truth).. you mean the (only) WCDMA phone with a 4096 colour screen, without a camera, that has an external antenna and looks like it was designed in the middle of the 90's, the phone that 3 has said they will never sell beacause it's not good enough. Ah.. well I forgot about that one, trust me if I would get a 3G phone I would expect a lot more than that crap.
About EDGE phones, first of all there are almost no EDGE networks up and running AFAIK. At least not in my part of the world. Secondly I don't think EDGE will be any huge success anyway. It might be useful as a complement to 3G coverage on the 3G phones. But I hardly see any market for GSM/EDGE only phones. People who want/need fast networks will buy 3G/WCDMA phones and the people who don't need that couldn't care less about EDGE. Most people don't even care about GPRS, and the people who do like quite a few here on Esato will probably have 3G phones at the end of next year. This is nothing against EDGE as a technology, it's just that I don't think it will take off.
Well.. series 60 might be quite popular but technoloy wise it doesn't stand a chance when compared to UIQ. Series 90 is probably as advanced as UIQ, but this is not available yet, while UIQ has been on the market for almost a year. DVB-H, is nice but this still is a few years away. And just beacuse Nokia is the only one who has announced that, doesn't mean that they are the only one who is developing DVB-H.
And well.. the N-gage isn't going to be any success.. IMHO. A swedish newspaper compared the N-gage and the Gameboy Advance as a gaming device and the Gameboy won easily. I tested it for a little while and the 3D graphics were quite jerky. But Nokia deserves some credit for making a gaming-phone, but sadly it's not good enough, maybe the next one will be better.

The 6230 is the phone I've been waiting for... a mp3 playback capable phone in a candy-bar form... Nokia should have done this a long time ago instead of making a mistake with their 5510 and repeating it with the 3300.
I reiterate my earlier post... I'd like to see

announce a phone like the 6230 with a built in music player and memory card support.

-Every Nokia Series 60 phone has 24-channel ringtones. Many of the latest Series 40 phones also have at least 16-channel ringtones (like Siemens) as well as True Tones (comparable to WAV).
-3620, 3660, 6230, 6600, 7600 and 7700 have 65K colour screens. Those are also the latest Nokia phones so 65K seems to be where they are heading. At least they never made 256 colour screens.. I've heard some bad things about the screen the T610 has, any truth in those?
-The "outdated Nokia interface" is probably the biggest reason to Nokia's success to this day! I believe it's what most people like about Nokias. The grid menu doesn't look very good on a 128 x 128 screen (it's more suitable for the 128 x 160 screen found on 6650 and 7600) anyway, in S60 it works like a charm.
-Series 60 phones are bricks? Most smartphones are. That doesn't concern only Nokia.

-The 6650 does have a camera. It has VGA resolution and video recording with sound.
-The phone is bulky but the screen is good (128 x 160, bright and easy to read even if it only has 4K colours). What did I say about the T610 screen..
-It was introduced back in 2002 well before the Z1010 (which is ironic because SE is technically far superior to Nokia) and it was one of the very first 3G phones. It hasn't been available for long but it's been used by operators for 3G network testing since the beginning. Nokia have said it was their last external antenna phone and you can see from the 7600 how small their 3G phones are getting now.
-Don't many Samsungs still have external antennas? V200, S300, S100, T100..

-Nokia introduced its first Communicator, the 9000 in 1996 and ruled the smartphone market until the last couple of years when it finally got some competetors and was getting old anyway.
-There are so many Series 60 devices out there and coming out there that P800 and P900 can't possibly match their sales figures. S60 phones are cheaper and most importantly, they suit for non-business users or tech geeks as well. Take the 3650 for example which has been one of Nokia's biggest hits this year. The first Series 60 phone (7650) was introduced in 2001 and it was the best selling digital camera in Europe in 2002!
-UIQ is more advanced than Series 60 and it has been able to rob the market from the aging Series 80 Communicator (the 9210/i, introduced in 2000) but all this time Nokia has been developing a new Series 90 Communicator which could be released before the end of this year. Either way, something special "is in the works" as head of NMP Anssi Vanjoki said.

-You couldn't tell how successful the Xbox was going to be after this short a period of time, so I don't think we know the truth yet about how successfull the N-Gage is going to be
-The Swedish press slamming the N-Gage was one of the biggest laughs in Finland a few weeks back

Yes, but as I clearly stated I wasn't counting Series 60 phones since they belong to the smartphone category. And a totally different category. I was comparing "normal phones". Phones that are competing with the T610.. ie Series 40 and not Series 60, since it uses Symbian OS. And almost all series 40 phones has 4 channel polyphonic ringtones, 4096 colours etc.

Once again these phones are not available yet. (6600 might be available though, not 100% sure about that). The rest of the phones are just announced ie not available in stores which is what you should count. Announcing a phone isn't the same as being available. It's easy to announce the phone. When looking at the available phones on the market Nokia is clearly behind SE, and most Asian Manuanufacturers.

The outdated menu interface of the series 40 phones are horrible today. It was good back in the 3210/3310 days.. but today they aren't very user-friendly. The grid menu worked very well on the T68/T300 and on the Siemens S55 phones and they all used a 101x80 pixels display, so it would be no problems fitting it in a 128x128 pixels screen

Sure.. I agree with that.

Sorry.. I was a bit hasty there.. I didn't really men without a camera, I meant without a camera for video-telephony. For a 3G phone 4096 colours isn't good enough. 3 has said they will never sell the Nokia 6650 because it simple isn't good enough, that says quite alot don't you think.

As always announced/introduced doesn't mean available in stores. I haven't seen any stores selling the 6650 and I probably never will since it is simple crap compared to all other 3G phones announced. I'm pretty sure that all manufacturers have had 3G prototype phones for quite some time without announcing them which also has been tested on the 3G networks. And the Nokia 6650 made such an impression on 3 that they will not sell it... Seems like a great phone.

Yes, they have but that's mostly beacuse the Asian market doesn't care as much about external antennas as europeans does. Nokia was first with built'in antennas (which was one of the reasons they sold very well back in the 3210/3310 days).

EDGE isn't worthless, that was not what I was saying. It's just that hardly any networks has added EDGE support. EDGE might be a complement to 3G. But I don't beleive it will take of with the GSM market. GPRS still isn't used very much... (sure I use it). People that care about high-speed data will most likely not settle with EDGE networks and will most likely get 3G phones instead. But EDGE has a place as a decent speed data network where you might lack 3G coverage.

Yes, that was one the truly innovative Nokia phones. A nice one really. To bad that the successors didn't have GPRS though, but other than that it was nice.

Of course P800/P900 can't match the Series 60 sales. As you said they are cheaper, and still a lot of people buys Nokias just because they have the Nokia name, not because they are better which they aren't. Nokia is living on it's name. But still the 3650 is no match to a P800.

Of course they will develop new stuff. But still not available yet. Talking about the future again. It's not like SE is going to stop developing their OS's.

No.. it's to early yet. Still I don't think it's good enough to attract any mass market. The Swedish press had some very good points when slamming the N-gage. In fact some gamer sites has made the exact same points. Still though credit to Nokia for trying to get into the market. And hopefully next generation N-gage will be a lot better.
