just to add, i read from the dailies (just this week either Manila times or Star, I could not remember) that NTC is already studying rates and license fees for 3G and there are two (2) new firms applying for 3g as their start up technology and not GSM. And they (our governement) will try not to repeat the experience of European operators which are still incurring big losses due to the high government license fees because of 3G hype. These two firms are separate from our present local networks (globe, smart, sun). I think the other one starts with letter M...Mind Link something and the other starts with C....Cure!!!Pardon my short term memory for now.

Let's qualify that statement: GSM is number one in terms user-base and availability. Technically speaking, there are are better alternatives out there.

This is indeed a very interesting topic to say the least I hope cdma arrives here in the philippines soon enough for us (globe,smart,sun users) to have a more viable alternative.

I think you forgot these facts:
CDMA2000 has narrower bandwidth than WCDMA. its slower than than WCDMA. Aside from that, WCDMA signals can also be be boosted by EDGE equipment to obtain even higher bandwidth.
CDMA2000 is the upgrade of current CDMA networks. therefore, it not compatible with with GSM equipment. Local GSM operators will have to shell out much more money in order to build up a CDMA2000 network.
There are no dual mode CDMA2000-GSM handsets. if you want to use CDMA2000 you'll have very small coverage. you'll still need a GSM handset. All WCDMA handsets being manufactured are dual mode to allow smooth handoff of calls between network elements because the WCDMA networks are built on top of a GSM network.
IMO, Express is way too late in the game. They wouldn't even be able to get the critical mass in order to justify nationwide expansion of a CDMA network much less a CDMA2000 network.

I'm pretty sure the people behind these companies will soon back out. 3G handsets cost so much more than GSM handset. How in the world will attract subscribers with handsets that cost as much as a P900. the current success of mobile operators in the Philippines is due to the prepaid market. Globe wasn't making money when its subscriber base was purely postpaid. When they introduced prepaid, Smart saw that there was a quicker way to get subscribers without the hassle of credit checks and so they jumped on the GSM bandwagon.
Does anyone actually believe that the Philippines postpaid market alone can sustain two 3G network operators? I don't think so. Will the prepaid market buy 3G? I don't think so. Handsets costs alone will be prohibitive not to mention the cost of 3G services.
It would be so much better if they decided to tie-up with existing operators instead. Build the the 3G network on top of Globe or Smart's existing network so that the the excess capacities of the two can be put to good use. The only problem with this concept is that the two giants may not want to split 3G revenues with anybody.
