Sure you can do alot with the current GSM networks. But with more and heavier use of that kind of services the networks wouldn't be able to ahandle it. But traffic jam reports with 3G could offer so much more. Like maps with directions to avoid the jams. Something that wouldn't really be possible with GSM phones.

No HSCSD is not the same. With HSCSD you just get some more timeslots but data isn't sent with packets like with GPRS or with EDGE or UTMS/3G. With HSCSD, you pay for a call, just like you do with a voice call (so you'll pay for the time you use it). HSCSD is in that way worse than GPRS.

One should look at GSM vs UTMS/3G as going from modem services (for the internet) to broadband. The technology in itself isn't that special, but the higher data rates allows for services that would be virtually impossible with GSM.

3/G3 is too young, they need another 2-3 years before it can really take off. Vodaphone may bring out their G3 in a year time, but it will be like 3 when they took off. The Z1010 will make an impact on the 3/G3 side, for one reason, all the other G3 mobile don't compare in looks.

With broadband though, comparing it to 3g networks, as with broadband I would never pay some of the (UK) prices, like BT which are asking £30 a month for it and some even more. But now companies are starting to appear which are offering affordable broadband £15-20 a month broadband is starting to take off more (where I live anyway). I think this is the same with 3g networks, firstly for it to ever take off I think 3 has to be abolished and let each network have their own versions of the 3g network to bring in more competition and then hopefully introduce a pay and go version of it and bring down the prices. I know personally I would never trust 3 and thus would never go on their network. Also they are a new company and I’m guessing their signal strength isn’t as good as older networks such as orange and o2. Thus another reason I think orange and other companies should have their own 3g networks as I personally see this is the only way that it is going to take off.

Just think if only a network called 5 would allow you to send MMS and no other network had the ability. I know I would never go on that network but if 3G is available on all networks then people will start to use it and think, yes that feature is useful and then start to use it more and more, but those people aren’t willing to change a network just to use it.

EDIT (Sorry I am just talking about the UK there, I have no idea what the 3G situation is like in other countires so what I have just said I is mainly relevant to the UK)

... so the Z1010 is only going to be available on 3?

As for the difference between the different technologies I can see that there are a lot of reasons why 3G *looks* like being a winner.

BUT ...

The trouble is (as someone rightly pointed out) that like MMS is now, the cost will be prohibitive for Joe Bloggs in the street. I too know very few people with MMS capable handsets and to date I have only ever sent (and received) one MMS! IMHO MMS is a complete waste of time.

As has also been pointed out some of the functionality like traffic reports etc is already available. OK, the networks may not be able to cope with the amount of traffic being passed but wouldn't it have been more cost effective to invest in the existing technology?

@davieboy

The 3 network is run by Hutchison telecom, who were the company behind Orange when it first launched, so they do have quite a bit of experience running a mobile network. I'd have no problem trusting them as much as other networks.

And your other point about abolishing 3... There is nothing stopping the other networks from launching their 3G services, because they all hold 3G licenses. It's just that 3 are the only ones who think it viable at the moment. The other networks are squeezing as much cash out of their GSM networks as possible (it's far more profitable than a 3G network) before they switch to 3G.

But in keeping with the topic... menus looking good - i like it

@ukchalky - do they all hold licenses? Your probally right, I just seem to remeber a few years ago there was some big thing on the news in the UK how networks were sort of bidding for this whole 3G thing and I figured it was the company behind 3 who won the contract kind of thing. But you are probably right about orange having something to do with the running of 3. But it brings me back to my point it is obvious other networks dont see it as being usefull yet as they havent launched their 3G networks, but like someone else said, back to the topic, yea the z1010 menus do look good, wonder if they will do an upgrade for the menus on the T610? lol *hopes but knows that ain't happening*
