Quite honestly, neither of these phones is going to kill each other as they are going after different demographics. The P900 is targetted primarily to people who want advanced PIM and phone features in a portable package. The communicator is more of a laptop replacement. As a phone, its huge. I've used quite a few of them and they are quite gigantic. Keep in mind that this new communicator weighs about sixty percent more than the P900. It is also substantially larger. It is esentially designed for people who need to access and create large spreadsheets and word documents on the go. It is not particularly useful for its PIM functionality becuase to use it one has to set it down on a table. It cant be used with one hand while standing the way the P900 can (at least not effectively). Besides, the P1000 will be out around the same time this is released. That will almost cerainly have WiFi support, more memory, EDGE support, and many of the other features this Nokia Laptop sports. It will simply come down to what you use the phone for. I personally would never buy a communicator simply becuase the size, and laptop type layout dont suit me. I need advanced PIM features which I can access easily with one hand. I personally believe that an ultraportable laptop makes more sense than a communicator.

I agree to some extent with the person who said the p900 and communicator are aimed at a different demographic... however, whilst this person (i forget the name apologies) suggests different users, may I suggest that the correct constituents comprise of the differing time scales...
The P900 is available, and will, as so oft stated, be out of date my the time the communicator is released...
Further, I tend to shy away from keyboard intergated devices, since they are rarely up to scratch... to the person who suggested the communicator is aimed at those who want to write extensive word documents and create spreadsheets... I think you are a little misled here...
I had what I consider to be the best keyboard enabled truly portable device ever, the Psion Series 5... the fact that the keyboard folded made it larger than most other offerings, whilst they keys were described as forming part of a touch type keyboard... However, as nice as it was, any fully grown male will have immense difficulties in typing successfully with it for extended lengths of time... thus, such a problem with the communicator will be much greater...
Much better, perhaps, is the ability to add a keyboard for times when you need one... something which the P900 offers... if you dont need it all the time, you don't have to attach it, but when you do, at least it is full sized...
Thus, I do believe the point that the communicator is largely keyboard based will be its ultimate downfall...
Further, to those who think the spec is high, with 80Mbs of memory... well at this point in time there are devices with much more... the XDA2 for example is, in comparison, a power house, with a 400Mhz processor and 128mb memory (albeit for running programs and storage)... and the use of MMC cards... whatever happened to SD, which would provide a means to Wi-fi if it isn't integrated...
My point is, that the spec for the communicator will, I hope, seem rather sparse when compared to what I expect in 6 months time...

Nokia has buffed up its venerable 9000 series Communicator with tri-band GSM, GPRS EDGE and Wi-Fi support, in partnership with IBM. But this isn't the long-awaited version based on the Hildon user interface. It uses Series 80, which made its debut three years ago, but which has been deprecated in favor of the new Series 90 platform. Series 90 differs by adding pen-input and sleeker menus.
The phone is pitched firmly at enterprises. IBM has added security and management features, and prodded Siebel and SAP to release client versions of the software for the phone; a price tag of €800 ($1000) should keep it out of reach of the consumer market.
Sources told The Register that the first keyboard-based device to sport the Hildon user interface was late because of an internal decision to use backport the UI to Series 80. Series 90 was delivered in November, with the as-yet unreleased 7700 media phone.
The 9500 is pretty significant in at least one respect: it's Nokia's first Wi-Fi phone, and shows that Nokia carrier customers have nothing to fear from supporting devices with both cellular and 802.11b technologies. ®

Second of all, I dont think that Nokia's phone will get far with only 65K of colors. 264K (not sure if it's that exact number) is the next step. Japan's ahead (way ahead)

There's not much to say about this, it's just a natural evolution for the Communicator, adding more features for those that like the Communicator's way of doing things (ie, a niche market of business types that need this style of phone). It's pointedly done nothing to address the keyboard-orientated form factor that's put the rest of us off the previous models, and by the time it comes out the P1000 will be offering the same or better features, in a package that we'll all find more attractive.
@ amnesia - I think SE are committed to UIQ for the forseeable future. A Sony (not SE) exec did make noises about palm a little while ago, but he was probably just keeping things sweet.

Dunno why we're still intrigued about a Nokia phone that hasn't even been released yet. Better yet, in an SE thread. Anywho, I'll be more overwhelmed by Japan's 900i when I visit Japan in early Spring. Moreover, once they finally enter the GSM network I'm sure we'll all be looking elsewhere for phones
