Seriously? Which area was this shop in? What phone did you get? So if you leave Japan with the phone and return, say 4 months later, can the prepaid credit still be used?

I purchased a pre-paid phone (J model) with 65k screen res and camera with a resolution over 1meg at a Vodophone shop in Narita airport as soon as I landed. I think the phone was only a little over $100usd. I had to get a minimum 3,000 yen pre-paid card which the system sais would retain my # for over a year before I have to refuel the account. I then purchased a V801sh at a shop in the Akihabara district. I got a great deal on it and it's the creme of the crop when it comes to WCDMA/GSM 3G phones. You do need a Japanese address in order to get those non pre-paid units though. I was able to use my Tokyo apartment address even though I'm only there a few weeks out the year. But it seems like High res cameras and color screens were common even in there cheapest of phones. The line of 3G phones compared to what I've seen in the West are comparable in price, but the technical specs are far more advanced in the Eastern market phones.

Lots of 3G phones with hi-res cameras, screens, 2-way videophone applications, built in GPS software and module, Mem DUO PRO capable phones stacked on outdoor stands for less then half the value of P900.. I saw a P900 on display at a department building for close to $1k. Being that they are not functional in the Japanese markets I don't think consumers would pay that much for an import when their in-house phones have more features for half the price. They are making headway in developing the technology to allow these phones to roam globably. It's available in a few models right now.

Picture quality sux, but this was one of hundreds of phone stands laid out on the streets... They were really promoting their videophone and phone tv features. I have a mobi player type of TV streaming service with tons of channels that I subscribe to when I'm in the states. However, I noticed the stream quality to be much smoother in the Eastern market.

Definitely Wifi, a slightly bigger screen and a 4megpix camera with 4x digital zoom and 32mb internal user usable memory. A faster processor wouldn't hurt either.

-GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900, WCDMA 2100/1900
-260K TFT Display
-1.3 or 2.1 Megapixels Back camera with flash
-0.3 Front camera for video call
-aGPS
-Support for Memory Sticks Duo Pro
-64/128 Internal Memory
-FASTER PROCESSOR
-Wi-Fi
-Symbian 8.0

Nothing more, nothing less.
Thats how a $900-1000 smartphone of the year 2005 has to be.
Thats how the upcoming P1000 should be...

Key requirements are

1. Connectivity - which means 3G and WiFi and an add-on GPS. Plus improved email support and better internet browsing with landscape support.
2. Content - which means greater storage capacity and RAM and improved camera. Also improved quality MP3 and support for ATRAC+ (Sony's secure digital music format).
3. Business appeal - which means improved PIM and more consistent and stable synchronisation software.

Are you using the V801SH in your home country with the Japanese sim, or have u put in your own sim to use in it?

Sorry for all these questions... you've been a great source of help!

@shinyspoon:

I use a Vodophone sim when I'm in the UK. The roaming fees for the Japanese sim is ridiculously expensive, but at least it works in the UK. You won't be able to use the phone with a UK sim when in Japan however. I use my P900 in the states. The phone is GSM capable so it technically works with any GSM carrier. You will have to get it unlocked if you want to venture out of using Vodophone sim cards.
