I believe you can, but they are not cheaper, unless you buy it on contract.

PAYG phones in the UK are generally cheaper.
eg from CPW - T610
orange -£129.99
o2 - £149.99
t-mobile - £179.99
vodaphone - £129.99
SIM free - £149.99

eg - NEC e313
SIM free - £99.99
3 -- £ 19.99

eg - Nokia 3410
SIM free - £69.99
o2 - £29.99

@bobafett
the t630 is priced in CPW as
o2 - £179.99
t-mobile - 179.99
SIM FREE - £179.99

from o2 retail it is £159.99

@MUDVAYNEX
the e313 is only £19.99 in carphone Warehouse but you must buy a top-up card of 10pounds too. To buy the phone SIM free is £99.99

I think the original basis for branding is to provide some network specific features that aren't easily available in the basic firmware.

e.g. T-Zones on T-mobile or links to buy ringtones from your provider in the Pictures & Sounds menu

at this basic level the branding doesn't get in the way, but some companies take it a little too far. I can understand providing quick access to purchase pics and sounds online to maybe get customers to buy a few more rings. I can't agree with making the phone operate completely differently.

Judging by SE probably know what their customers want, I am suprised they agree to do it. My P900 was branded to vodafone, I took it to my local store & they told me to remove the brandin was impossible, fortunately CPW removed the branding with a generic firmware update...
