yes using cracked softwares is somewhat wrong cause it would be really unfair to the creator, especially when the creator is an individual who have the abilities and the desire to enrich other people's life (i.e. ajack with his sman though he never required people to make contribution).
but for some people sometimes its very difficult to purchase softwares (or anything else) through the internet cause you mainly have to use a credit card and in some countries (like mine) the banks dont provide you adequate protection for your credit card. all the protection stated in the agreement is merely a bs... i myself will never use my credit card for an online purchase fearing that someone else might be using it. i lived in the states for quite a while and yes if i have US issued cards i would comfortably use em for making an online purchase (which i did several times) knowing i'm fully protected.

Although ethically wrong... I think this may be part of the reason why things will always be expensive... computer games cost between £20-£30, dvd's a rip off at £15+ for the latest titles, and the average store bought album costing a tenner or more...
The argument as to whether to download for free or buy is counter productive - download 'cos things are a rip off, but things are a rip off partly due to people wanting everything for nothing...
It is a little unreasonable to view intellectual rights in media as being any thing different to purchasing a car or a TV - much time goes into some software, but the peson who does tis work endures reduced revenue as thousands are fleecing them as soon as it's released... whilst I do not whole heartedly feel that piracy leads to higher prices (the industry is greedy full stop) it is this I feel that truly stifles true innovation in software design bythose not fortunate enough to be part of a a large development team and garner wages associated with it... compute games in general have become vastly boring over the past few years, as everything seems to be the same - indeed most companies use the same graphics engine, but just change the plot a little...
Just remember that it is a double edged sword - soon it may well be that there is nothing worth downloading, even if it is free!...

What would you have done before the internet... nick it from a shop? (so long as none of your firends had it of course)
Nicking it from a shop is a little different, the owner of the shop has paid money for it and by you stealing it you are stealing money from him! ALso hence the packaging cost a bit of money plus the CD, manual,etc...........
But realy........ Software companies should think harder about making there software so you cant copy it, there are quite a few different ways!

Either way you are stealing from someone or other at some point and if you keep stealing from the shop keeper he will eventually close business, which means everyone suffers...
And at the end of the day, pinching is pinching, no matter how or where or when you actually do it... that was the point i tried to illustrate - it appears that so many people think it ok to download illegal software, but wouldn't dream of pinching it from their local store...
And as for copy protection... there are numerous ways, but for just about every way of protection there is, someone has found a way of cracking that too, and probably will continue to do so each time a new one appears - further, if companies have to "invest" in such protection, ultimately the price for software etc. will rise even further, as if things are really expensive enough !
