I totally agree with the "Time Restricted" versus "Features Restricted" thing, but as a programmer I also know how much easier is to crack/fool a Time Restricted program than a Features Restricted program.
If the Demo Version is not a complete program, then you are protecting your investiment since no one tries to crack it (for wich purpose?) and you have to go to a lot of effort to find a complete (and cracked!) version in the web!

That is a very good point. I never thought of it like that...

Hmmm.. how many of us would purchase something even if tiz for $5 if we know that it is available for free elsewhere?? I dont think piracy will jus die off, i mean if u r selling something for jus 50c, there wud be people who wud it pirate it and give it for free as well as people who get it from them. There are lotsa websites in the interent which has pirated Px00 stuff. People have got so used in using 'free' software that the thought of buying them doesn't occur at all. lemme be honest I've tried pirated versions of quite a few s/w for the UIQ, but dont use them on the phone coz I dont much use for them. I can do with Agile messenger and Opera for the net, and OggPlay for Music. SMan takes care of the rest. I tried CameraFX, Advanced Call Manager, Total Irremote, etc, but none of them were impressive enuf that i no longer use them, and have uninstalled them to save disk space!

Perhaps this is part of the problem though... in making it more difficult for softwares to be cracked by feature restricting, actual genuine users may not actually buy the software either...
It has been suggested already that generally those who pirate wouldn't buy the program anyway - thus why target them... the genuine user is punished in this way by not being allowed a full, albeit time limited version to explore... there is surely more chance that such a genuine user would purchase the software if he is given a fair chance to utilise it...
Fighting pircay seems like an impossible battle - similarly it is therefore pointless and indeed counter productive to take this out on those willing to recognise true programming talent in the creation of a superior program...
Further, the determined cracker will break whatever restrictions are in place regardless, so it sems kinda pointless to me...

I've bought quite lot programs for my p900, though i am also using a few cracked versions of some programs. My consciousness towards pirated software is proportional with the size of the developing company. I would never pay microsoft for their software, and i do not feel bad about this at all. Not a soul in the microsoft corporation would take notice if i payed or not, but first and foremost, I try my best to avoid supporting greedy, monopolist billion-dollar industries that has a strategy of killing their competition in the most unethical ways.
But as for the p900, the developing houses are in general very small, much of the software i've bought is from a lone developer, whose motivation for developing that might depend on my registration.
Yet i haven't bought all the programs i use frequently, but i might end up doing so in the end, but my main motivation is when the program is in constant development. The programs i haven't bought are mainly those who have stopped evolving. The best way to ensure that people get a close relationship with the product, is through an active forum, where the users and developers communicate, and the user feels a moral obligation to pay, if his or hers suggestions come through, and the next version has the features the user requested.

Q:
Would you be happy if instead of a crippled Demo program, the web site distributed a PowerPoint or Flash presentation, or even a movie-like presentation of the program features being used?
What's your opinion on this?
Would it work for you?
(feel free to post your opinions)

Personally, I *often* use cracked software for testing purposes. If I intend to use the software permanently, I *always* buy the needed license. Ok, one can say that people who looks for cracked software would often not pay anyway, but it's wrong to generalize too much...

All legal + freeware soft before on my P800 & now P900 (handyday suite, remotePx00, Desktopmessage, sman and some small games)
if you can afford the phone, you should be able to afford this (cheap) software aswell! (it's like driving a big expensive sportscar and then pretend you can't afford its fuel consumption)

I can see where you're coming from with that, and possibly for some types of program this could work...
However, as the program becomes more complex, so it targets more demanding users who require a diversity of features which would be impossible to catalogue into a presentation which could be easily downloaded...
Thus, if the download is too large, dial up users or those on slower connections will become disenchanted with the whole process, having to download the program afterwards as well... and there are a surprising number still on narrowband, so this is of importance...
This would equally not be of use with a game, maybe even some kind of softwares... it is nice to work out how responsive a program is, how compatible and stable it is with your system, and how to actually handle the thing yourself...
Your suggestion could be a method of reducing piracy to some extent, but then again all it takes is one purchasing user to post the program in it's entirety on a website they host to waste the hwole thing...
In my opinion, in spite of piracy, although I lose nothing by it so perhaps am biased, the try before you buy route should always be preferred - time restrictions and all...
