Personaly I find owning a wrist watch is usually a good idea. The time function is not a necessary essential. Its just a simple feature. My first phone (an Ericsson 628) didnt have a clock feature and if I needed to know the time I looked at my watch. Its something that we carry with us nearly all the time.

i personally dont think a clock in idle screen is that important
on my k700 i use power safe mode
whenever i need to check the time
just press once on back key to illuminate the backlight for a while
thats not too difficult
plus a clock in idle is hardly visible in dim lighting condition
i rather see my phone save as much power as possible by leaving the screen totally blank whenever its idle

I agree with @joven, i dont need a clock on my k700i screen, a power save mode is much better as it saves max. power and if ever i want to see the time i just press the side +/- key.

I don't want to be overly difficult but since I carry a mobile I have no wristwach anymore.
In some other threads people are discussing if the pda is becoming obsolete because the new mobiles can do it all and here the necessity of a clock is being questioned. It must be hard for an SE product developer to find the right combination of functions.
The push vol up or down to illuminate the screen is very good. My humble T600 has somrthing similar: push the option button (in stand by mode, with keys locked) and the screen illuminates for two seconds, just enough time to see the time and status of the phone. It is one of the many very well thought-through functions on that phone. It is that kind of simple solutions that makes SE different from the rest of the bunch.

Ok. Say you've got a nice expensive phone (eg P900) and some would be opportunist theif asks you for the time and you take your phone from your pocket/holster (you don't have a wrist watch remember) and at that moment they decide to snatch the phone and run leaving you without you nice phone. See how a watch comes in handy even when you've got a phone that has a clock feature

Probably an oversight. they can probably fix that with a firmware update

As usual, SE "oversees" minor details, which can make a buyer's life a pain in the ass (check out the missing shutter sound switch on k700i, etc.).
THEY SHOULD f*cking gather some regular people to do some beta testing of the functions BEFORE they release any phones.

it's funny to read Page 69 on the S700i manual: THE TIME IS ALWAYS DISPLAYED IN STANDBY.
now i'm wondering what they mean by "in standby", [when the screen goes blank?]

Standby is when the screen is on and the phone is waiting for a call. Nothing in this thread but crying, whining babys. So it does not have a clock. Raise your arm and look at your watch. Belgie, maybe the phone is a bit to sophisticated for your tastes. Stick to more simple phones. I can not believve that grown adults are losing their minds over the lack of a clock.
