It could be Petilius Cerialis and the ninth legion as they were on their way to relieve the town of Camulodunum, which was besieged by the Iceni, under Boadicea. Of course it could be another Roman general, the Romans didn't win all the time in Britain, but this is one of their more famous defeats.

It was Germany, not Britain (sorry it was off the top of my head)
The guy was named Quintilius Varus, and he took three legions into Germany (Teutonenberg Forest, to be specific) and completely ignored his flanks, which got his ass whupped by Armenius.
The emperor at that time was Caesar Agustus.
