Honesty is always the best policy. There are several ways ( within the jurisdiction of England and Wales ) in which you could purport to exercise rightful (& legal) ownership of the product in question. However, I would advise you to return the item. This seems completely logical to me.
If you choose dishonesty, then so be it. I would not even consider keeping the item. This is not some 'holier than thou' preaching, merely common ethics. In my line of work I have multiple opportunities to 'take people for a ride', but I don't. In my opinion, simple morality and ethics would be a good idea to start with.
