i dont think older members are abusive to newbies. i primarily talk to newbies and not to the more famous members or whatever

Yeah. I do not think that the veterans here are generally harsh on newbies. But if some newbie posts something which is against the forum rules, he might get a warning from a mod or a veteran member . Thats perfectly ok imho. And the post count? Its the last thing on my mind while rating members. Since i'm always on wml, i dunno how many posts others have made. I don't even know my post count!

I've been doing a bit of thinking on this subject...
Some of the "veterans" are indeed looking after the others by telling flamers off and set them in place. That is why Esato is, fairly, "self moderated". By doing that they save us moderators for a graet deal of work sometime by getting topics back on track and actually save us from locking and ditching topics. One thing I miss when this happen is a PM from one of these "veterans" explaing and refering to the situation so the member concerned recieve an official warning for the action if need be. I must admit I don't allways read the whole topic when moderating; I'll read the first page, a couple of randomly picked ones and the last page of longer topics. If I find the topic OK at front and edn I'll leave it and take it for granted that everything is fine, but if there has been a "veteran conflict solver situation" on one of the pages I've skipped I'll have missed it.
Another thing that I find a bit funny is this; Someone asks something asked several times before, the first reply to that question is simply "USE SEARCH!!!". What kind of answer is that? Simple; "I know i've seen it in here somewhere so find it yourself. I can't be bothered looking around for you, I can't remeber the answer but know it is in here, but I got one more post on my post count and the first reply to the post." (Note: hardly any +500 posters do this, it's usually those who have a couple of hndred posts less than that). LAZY SHOW OFF! I don't mind people saying "Use Search" but that ought to come with an answer of a referrence to a topic where the raply can be found.
I think the majority of the "veterans" are polite and helpfull to new commers but there is allways the odd one who dives out and scare some poor new member so far off that he'l never come back and, on top of that, tells all his friends and forum buddies elsewhere to stay clear of the rat hole Esato. False rumours are started and we get a reputation that is not easy to prove wrong.
All in all Esato is a cool, informative and educating place to hang out where people talk about
phones and a lot more.

I don't think it has anything to do with post counts or the length of time they've been members of Esato, it's just the bad attitudes of a handfull of members
One thing I find interesting on any forum, however, is that it's so easy to take things the wrong way. I think it's mainly due to the fact that it's very difficult to get your mood or meaning across when you can only use text to communicate. People can't see your body language or hear the tone of your voice.
Sure, smillies help to an extent but I think it's still very easy to misunderstand people on a forum. I've been guilty of it myself more times than i can remember

Tranquil is very right about the search smiley. Its just annoying. I think some of the members that use it lose track of how many pages back in the forum a topic can get in two or three days. Sure you remember seeing that same question recently, but to the guy that just signed up it is impossible to find. The whole situation is made worse by a mediocre search function, sometimes I can't even find a topic I saw two days ago.
Other than the occasional rant about searching, integrating is really easy. Its just a matter of finding topics that intererst you that you have something to say about.

you are right about things being taken the wrong way when written down.
i am naturally a p*ss taker and there have been loads of times when i have written something then looked at it and thought "that sounds really nasty" but if i had said it out loud people would have laughed and, if i was lucky, a cute bird would have slapped me. (hey, when you are as ugly as me any contact is good).
its just too easy to take things the wrong way when written down, and i think that there have been a few times when people who are new to forums in general have made the mistake of not reading thier posts properly and got themselves flamed into the bowels of hell, without meaning any harm.

I agree with Knight4led - the search function isn't the best I'm afraid! I've often searched for a subject I know has been discussed before at least once, and not been able to find it. Even using the 'wildcards' like '+' etc. doesn't always bring up what you're looking for.
@nature - you're right - it's very easy to misunderstand what someone's said or how they say it, I did it myself with someone off Ebay yesterday and got into quite an argument with him, which I've just emailed a very apologetic apology to!
I also don't like the way some members talk to newbies - I got involved in a bit of a flame war with someone who flamed a newbie myself! Even older members ask sometimes simple questions - I know I have on a few occasions when I can't find anything in the manual or tried unsucessfully searching for it.
A bit of patience is required, and leeway with new members posting what seem to be simple questions. They're not simple questions if you don't know the answer!

take the p800 manual 250+ pages and still loads of questions on here that should have been included in the manual!!
its times like that when someone asks a question about something thats not in the manual but WE have known the answer to the question for years when some of us should be more tolerant and not jump down peoples throats.
its like chris tarrant says : its only easy if you know the answer.

But I will not rise this again as I can imagine blood is starting to cook again over this.. Well, I got flamed and took my lesson out of it. Apparently after this the
smiley got a little bit out of order and imho the attitude towards 'not-so-difficult' questions changed a little bit for all posters..
I´m still feeling splitted about those questions. I answer all, giving them a thread where they could find help (followed from time to time by a friendly ':search: next time') or a solution as good as possible. But I expected this forum to be dedicated to those who are a little bit more interested in their phone - you don´t register with this forum accidentally - and therefore those who had at least one look into their manual.
Nevertheless this doesn´t prevent me from answering, and the rest is up to me..
note: if someone feels (again) offended by my words pls pm a moderator to delete them instead of flaming - I don´t want to let this very interesting thread die for my statement (but I guess I can post my opinion too)

I've noticed that quite a few people stay up late on esato fighting off sleep so maybe they aren't very patient sometimes, sleep can do wonders, that's of course if they aren't the kind that wakeup in a bad mood and still log on to esato.
Hey nobody's perfect and everyone looses their temper sometimes and what am I doing defending veterans I'm a newbie
Maybe esato should have a reputation power system like mobileburn where other members vote for your reputation rating then we can tell the good veterans from the old veterans.
