A 4096 colour screen offers 16 shades of red, green and blue. 16x16x16=4096. The numbers 0...4095 (4096 numbers) can be held in a 12 bit number (2x2x2 ... 12 times).

A 'true colour' screen is one that can display 16777216 colours - 256 shades of red, green and blue (256x256x256=16777216). This can be held in a 24 bit number, but is often stored as a 32-bit number, with the remaining bits unused (perhaps one bit allocated for transparency) as 32 bit numbers are much easier to manipulate in computers than 24 bit numbers.

The K700's screen can display 65536 colours, which is 16 bit. This translates to 32 shades of red, green and blue, which can actually be fit in a 15-bit number (32768). The last bit tends to be used for transparency, or just ignored. Once again, 16 bits (2 bytes) are much easier to manupulate in a computer than 15 bits.

Sega Mega Drive graphics were 16 bit,and does it mean that the K700i has similar graphics to the Mega Drive because it has 16 bit? This message was posted from a T300

@govigov

The S700 has a 262144 colour screen. This is 64 shades of R, G and B and can be stored in an 18 bit number.

@RicK700i

The Sega Saturn had True Colour graphics (16 million colours). I think you are confusing the colour depth with the CPU's bus width. They are totally separate.

So the max color any phone (or any vdu) can display is 1.6 million? This message was posted from a K500

but....... before you all get tooooo excited....

There is a difference between the internal colours of a phone, and the external representation. Basically, internally the phone processes the display at a higher display level, but the LCD panel reduces it down to the actual output.

eg:
P800 internally 16/24bit, but externally its 12bit. Meaning the phoen processes its display at 16 or 24 bit, but when the signal is sent to the LCD, the bottom bits are chopped off/ignored.

the T610 is internally and externally 16bit colours

the S700i is internally 16/24bit. When 16 bits is used, the LCD controller adds a zero to the bit, whilst if 24bit is used, the bottom bits are cut off.

BUT, in Java, only 16bit is supported on the S700, therefore the extra capacity is lost anyway.

in real terms there is very little difference the eye can see between 16 and 18bit. in fact, many LCD panels for the COMPUTER are actually 18 or 20 bit too. and use similar cutting off techniques to get from 24bit true colour to the actual depth.

A major confusion is being circulated in this thread. The colour depth of the screen of the phone, and the no. of bits of the java engine are entirely different concepts. When a game is a 16 bit game, it does'nt mean that it has 16 bit colour graphics. No, it means its gaming engine can process 16 bits of information at a go.

When one says my sega has 8-bit games this means that his sega's processor processes 8-bits at a time.

The question asked was 'are the games in a k700 16-bit or not?' While I dont have an answer to this question, I know for a fact that the ngage has a 32-bit 3D compatible gaming engine.

Hope this clears out some of the confusion.
