They circle the globe and cover pretty much most of it.. try googling for it, i donīt really know, but my GPS should work all over Europe and in North America anyways.

Iridium was the satellite phone network company with a whole lot of satellites to cover the earth.
Costs and lack of take up on their services was what made them take down the network (or sell it, not sure).
My opinion though is if you want a GPS, get a dedicated GPS, since more attention to detail and functionality would be dedicated to JUST the GPS, whereas with a multifunction device (like a GPS mobile phone) there would be compromises and sacrifices...thus not allowing the best design. (One such dedicated device that is available and that works beautifully is the Tomtom GO GPS system).
Besides, the processor on the mobile device (especially current Pxxx series) would have to upgraded to handle this extra workload. However, convergeance is the way things are going...so i guess its inevitable!
On the other hand, would you realy want that amount of radiation in your ear with a GPS antenna in a GPS mobile phone??

Tomtom (http://www.tomtom.com) offer a GPS suite for PDA's...and soon to be offered for the P900 series as well!
