the filmaker's point was to show he suffered more than anyone ever had before, or ever possibly could, to purge the sins of mankind. one would hope that the Son of God would be a little more resilient than the average human.

the only reason for the apparent snub at the oscars was the controversy around the film, and the complete lack of anything resembling bribery to persuade the judges/voters. the oscars are very corrupt and political, and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves (e.g. denzel washington in 'training day' over russel crowe in 'a beautiful mind', gwyneth paltrow in 'shakespeare in love' over cate blanchett in 'elizabeth').

Might be true..
But still Monty Python´s Black knight scene sprung to my mind more than once during the film..
I agree completely with you on the "Beautiful mind" thing tho.

@gelfen - Hmmm . . . I thought that the Americans are just one of the honest and 'straight' people around If money really talks here, Mel Gibson could have just easily gave some 'grease' money to the jurors (Oscar's) considering the amount the movie earned - worldwide, more than US$650 million as reported

but that was never the point of the movie. i don't think the winning of an oscar would really incluence anyone's opinion of this particular film anyway.

@gelfen - Hmmm . . . wayback then, I saw this interview with Marlon Brando, asking him what will he choose between a Top Grosser Film or an Academy Award, the legend chose the latter . . . Sometimes, it's NOT just the money after all - mate.

most of the people who saw this film did so because of the "controversy", and will never watch it again. i doubt anyone who hasn't seen it will do so on the strength of an oscar win, but on either word of mouth or as a matter of faith/curiosity.

@gelfen - Hmmm . . . well, as I have seen in some reports there were some individuals (offenders) who turned themselves in (after having viewed it), some claimed to have killed somebody, stolen things in a store et al, their conscience couldn't hold their guilts I presume - that's why. Also, a number turned their wicked ways to GOOD after viewing it. There are just some positive results this film have contributed to the populace mate !

Am very surprised, thought it was little different in places to the over the top unnecessary violence in "reservoir dogs". Whether it deserves an Oscar, well as usual it is down to peoples perception and taste. And probably who is currently "brown nose of the month" rather than quality film making!

Yup! I heard about this issue as well mate, good post!

It is not a good post - it is ignorant and bigotted - and, quite frankly, you are at best misguided if you agree.

This makes my blood boil to be quite honest. @moderators - do you not see anything wrong here? Are off-topic, sarcastic comments that offend whiny individuals more worthy of removal and reprimand than this? If so, I think I may be in the wrong place!

I think you are right, that is not a good post. People spreading myths such as that only serve to perpetuate racism and bigotry which have no place in a modern world.
