route66 looks like the better option to tomtom, pretty much the same thing but free traffic info.
As for updates on route66. dont know. I think once you buy it thats it, no more map updates. Tomtom you can purchase map updates and wayfinder they are all included in the annual/lifetime subscription.
Maps are never 100% anyway. They are compiled by teleatlas but can be 6months out of date by the time teleatlas combile the maps and publish them. All the major maps use Teleatlas so if upto date maps is the key then wayfinder is the way to go.
Tomtom does seem like a very very expensive system.
