Its not only the distance that decreases the throughput. But also number of users in the network (GPRS is packet based after all).

Can someone explain a little more about fatreg's comment concerning the number of people in your cell. My understanding is that the more people, the lower your speed but that you should retain whatever speed you initially connect with, regardless of how many people join after you.
Trouble is, using my Orange 3g data card, this does not seem to be the case. I might start off quite quickly but often find it slows down considerably...even if I am not moving.
Also, surely Wigmore street, being in Central Londo, would provide a slower speed as there are more likely to be lots of people using that particular cell?! I am confused!

GPRS is like IP (e.g. internet) no bandwith is allocated for you specifically. A connection in GPRS only means you have established contact with a GPRS network, not that you have allocated a certain amount of bandwidth. If others connect to same cell after you, you have to share the bandwidth with them.
For normal GSM voice calls its a different story. Then a circuit based service is used instead meaning bandwith is allocated for your call (no one can take it from you).

So, I am wrong to think that you are supposed to be guaranteed the speed you initally connect with. This explains why I have experienced fluctuations when using my laptop.
For what its worth, whilst I have only been using it for a month, the Orange 3g data card has generally been very dissapointing. I would guess my average speed has been no more than 100 and as often as not, I have either been disconnected or the internet has just frozen whilst surfing. (and don't even get me started on POP3 emailing). All in all, not impressed.
